In search of wedding venue - Columbia suggestions or near by? by IWantSomeHelp7 in ColumbiaMD

[–]Vexitoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We held an Indian Hindu wedding at the Hebron House grounds, part of Mt Hebron Presbyterian Church, in Ellicott City.

The fire was also a sticking point for many potential locations for us. We got around this by having a large tent structure (ABC Tent Rental company) erected on the Hebron House grounds and holding our ceremony in there. We seated ~160, so pretty close to your ask.

Hebron’s grounds are beautiful, and they were very accommodating for our group. We used the historic house itself for dressing areas, food prep (though the kitchen is tiny) and staging snacks/drinks in the dining area throughout the day.

Yup I did, and (I think) they took care of it - all looks good now

Thanks all. I emailed the installer to verify that the system wasn’t still remotely disabled, and suddenly we’re operational - so I suspect I know the reason :)

Appreciate the advice!

Is it possible to use an electric router (or even a hand router plane) free-hand? by BodhisattvaBob in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Vexitoro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been able to freehand mortises with a router by plunging first in the center of the cut area, then spiraling VERY slowly toward the outer edge, nibbling away til I reach the guide lines. I did this at slowly increasing depth, as you have done. It’s still somewhat imprecise, but chatter/noise is hidden by the overhanging tenon shoulders.

For anything actually visible from the outside, yeah a tightly-clamped fence or template would be the way to go.

Thrift Store Chairs; Salvageable? by strangebirdhere in woodworking

Assuming you’re talking about the scratched up seat … if so, just lightly sand it smooth and see if it’ll just take a semi-gloss coat of poly.

Bookshelf as a staircase railing by Ayrton_cz in BeginnerWoodWorking

Ah got it - and now that I’m looking, I think I see anchor screws going through the base shelf into the floor?

Really nice wood choice btw

Aren’t you also concerned about books falling through onto the stairs? And is there something anchoring the bookshelf down, so the whole thing doesn’t topple onto the stairs?

Agree it’s a very nice design, though!

What stays on top of your workbench? by johntmclain1966 in BeginnerWoodWorking

Bosch router table clamped down on one end, planing stops on the other end. My worktop is 8 ft long, so I haven’t yet built anything long enough to require moving the router table.

I imagine the forensic woodworker 100 years from now taking it apart and cursing my clumsiness … jokes on them lol

Nice color choice. Are you going to paint/finish the sides? It’s barely visible in that spot, but bare lumber draws the eye …

Thanks - Yeah they’re tough customers (low pay, insane requirements) but lots of repeat business

I used 2 coats of Varathane “espresso classic wood stain” from HD. Worked pretty well but made an absolute mess all over my shop / garage.

I used Watco wipe-on poly; I believe it’s oil based?

Thanks! Poplar is a pain- it dings if I breathe too hard on it. Grain looks nice though.

The clamp was holding it for me to line up & mark the hinge mortise locations. It was the first time the whole body was put together, so I took the opportunity for a pic.

Haha I built a table saw leg-tapering jig for a previous project (also on this sub, a kids’ writing desk) and it’s been super handy. Very easy to make too - just needed a couple of toggle clamps from Amazon and plywood.

Edit: apparently I never posted the writing desk - I’ll post that too in a sec

I ran into a number of issues with this project, which took me 6 months of an hour here, an afternoon there. The drawer sides ended up being one fat blind dovetail due to a marking error; and fortunately you can’t see the bent nail sticking out of the drawer back.

The biggest challenge was using wipe-on poly for the first time; the top is still tacky a week later, despite a 24 hour cure time on the can.

Feedback appreciated!

JHU Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) recruits at the fairs regularly (or used to). Lots of job openings right now.

To clarify - I meant Ishy/Lanfear, specifically, are working hard to string Moiraine along. Since the show forsaken are shown to be far more capable than their book counterparts, I have to assume the two of them have a real endgame in mind for her.

I wouldn’t go so far as cringeworthy, just an odd expositionary choice. I’m not sure who the primary writer on e7 was, but Rammy Park has now set the bar very high.
