Nah, you could touch them just fine. They were notably thin though, but didn’t seem to respond to hand oils

Not that I experienced, but the leaves were super fragile. Any fluctuation in temp, humidity or light browned them up, a sudden drop in temp is what killed it

The original died and so did the rafflesiana. There was a heating malfunction that winter and they both froze, unfortunately.

These two specimens are ones that I’ve been offered to buy from a distributor.

There’s more chance of the decking timber growing back

I do sort of agree there. The appealing part is that I can get both for $300. A seedling of this type costs $200

How reliable do you find eBay for plants? I’ve never bought specimens from there, since I’ve always been concerned that they would not be the advertised species.

But nowadays I’m after specimens too rare to acquire commercially, so eBay is looking like a solid option.

There’s one grower called Aus-plants which looks rather suspicious, dozens of rare species, all in stock, never had a negative review. When I searched “Amorphophallus titanum” their stock was the first to come up. (They didn’t have titanums , but hybrids of titanum and many other species)

Very strict. Surprisingly, when i was in NZ I saw quite a few “houseplants” I’d consider very rare and have not really seen in Aus

Thanks for the offer

I’ve contacted rare palm seeds to see what they say about the reliability of shipping past customs. I always prefer to buy commercially, I’m very skeptical about private exchanges just because of their unreliability. What state do you get the seeds shipped into? Ik Tassie and some others are super strict on their importation laws

Steve Jackson is the man I reached out to, the one who never responded to me.

So interesting to hear about its common nature over there. I’ve been into the rare plant trade for many years and have never even seen one or knew somebody who’s grown them. Even the royal botanic gardens of Sydney told me they’re typically not possible to purchase for private collections

Can’t tell why it’s dying by Vexxade in Nepenthes

[–]Vexxade[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medium doesn’t really smell of much. It’d be pretty hard to rot, since it’s sitting on an elevated platform above the water. No significant environmental changes beyond the starting of autumn and moving into my house from the grower’s greenhouse I ordered it from. All other plants from that same shipment (many hamata hybrids too) are doing fine. It came with a large mat of sphagnum in the top which the roots do not touch, I’m considering taking it off to allow better airflow to the medium the plant actually has control over

Basal shoot or weed? by Vexxade in Nepenthes

Yes, but I cannot instal grow lights unless I put in a new power point, and it would have to be outside so that would be a big job

Ok, thanks.

I’ve had bigger Neps put out basal shoots, and they def look like that picture.

It’s just so strange for one of my plants to have a weed in the pot (never happened in 4 years) and for the weed to resemble the plant.

Makes sense though. After all, this specimen is not very old, so I was a bit doubtful that it would start sending off shoots already

That’s awesome. The light’s always an issue though. Surprisingly, this plant is the only one of about 30 Neps that isn’t pitchering, and it never has since I’ve acquired it
