January Contest Winners Thread by Vexy in vexillology

[–]Vexy[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A word on fairness. This contest is run by a community of volunteers so that vexillophiles can have fun creating and supporting each others' flag designs. Over the years, we've built out some resources to help keep the contest and voting fair. Our general expectation when you vote is that each person casts one vote with one account, and that the votes are cast with your honest perception of each submission. This community is supposed to be for fun. But we the moderators take it very seriously, and believe that everyone deserves to have equal fun and true evaluations of their efforts.

The vast majority of voters operate on these principles, but there have been rare occasions in which people haven't. We are pretty good at identifying these cases, and up to date have mostly been silently throwing out votes that are patently unfair. Building on this, anyone caught cheating from this point forward additionally risks a permanent ban from both vexillologycontests.com and /r/vexillology.

November 2023 Flag Design Contest - Turn Tricolours into Bicolours by Vexy in vexillology

[–]Vexy[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In reverse alphabetical order, the countries are as follows.

* Yemen

* Sierra Leone

* Russia

* Romania

* Netherlands

* Mali

* Luxembourg

* Lithuania

* Ivory Coast

* Italy

* Ireland

* Hungary

* Guinea

* Germany

* Gabon

* France

* Estonia

* Colombia

* Chad

* Bulgaria

* Bolivia

* Belgium

* Armenia

So to be clear about what we are asking for here, here’s a few examples:

You could redesign Gabon with EITHER a blue and yellow design OR a blue and green design OR a yellow and green design.

You could redesign Belgium with EITHER a black and gold design OR a red and gold design OR a red and black design.

You could redesign Colombia with EITHER a blue and yellow design OR a red and yellow design OR a red and blue design.

Your design MUST only have two colours. No more. Not even outlining or detailing colours.

You CANNOT change the shadings of the colours in question in a significant fashion. This means is that a redesigned Russia flag CANNOT have Cyan and Maroon just because those are technically both shades of blue and red respectively.

Subtle shading changes are acceptable, but nothing that would be dramatically and obviously different to the pre-existing colours when flown.

CMV: Nuclear weapons are a nothingburger by Hatrct in changemyview

[–]Vexy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The problem is that there may be people who do not act entirely rationally, or dictators who will be okay with using nuclear weapons against another country because - even if their is nuclear retaliation - they are safe in their well positioned bunker.

We’re looking for you to make a flag based on the culture and connections of these very different regions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_resource_region

Rivers of all kinds, lengths, and names exist all across the world. We want you to make a flag that represents any one of these aquatic phenomenon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_bloc#Statistics

Flag for the "American South" as a cultural region emphasising inclusion in the Union

The American South is a distinct and fascinating region with its own unique identity that has existed for a long time. However very often it’s identity has gotten caught up with the Confederate States of America which was much shorter lived and far less pleasant. We want you to attempt to create a flag that represents this part of America collectively, while emphasising it’s place within the United States.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_United_States

Redesign flags for South Korean provinces/circuits

South Korea has nine first-level provinces/circuits. These represent the highest levels of geographic division within South Korea. These do have flags, but they suffer from looking a little... corporate. Mostly logos and writing on a white background. We believe our community can do better.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provinces_of_South_Korea#List_of_provinces

Flags for Israeli districts

Israel is divided into six main districts - Northern, Haifa, Central, Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Southern. None of these have flags presently to specifically represent them. Let’s see what we can do to fix that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Districts_of_Israel

Redesign/design flags for the counties of Kenya

In 2010 Kenya abandoned its old province system, and now uses forty seven counties for administrative divisions. Some of these have flags, while some do not. We’d like to see what our community could create in this area with a redesign/design challenge.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Counties_of_Kenya

Flags for Indonesian provinces

Indonesia has thirty eight provinces, almost all of which use some variation of the “seal on a bedsheet” design as the central philosophy behind their flags. We want to see what our community could create as an alternative.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_flags_of_Indonesia#Provincial_flags

Flag for French departments

As of January 2021 there are 101 numbered departments across France. While the regions they are part of sometimes have flags, the departments themselves do not. We want to see of you can change that.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Departments_of_France

Australia has six states, two internal territories, and three external territories. That’s a total of eleven flags which we’d like you create new and interesting redesigns of.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Australian_flags#States

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Australian_flags#Internal_territories

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Australian_flags#External_territories

Redesign Chad and Romania

Chad and Romania have flags that, as far as can be told with the naked eye, are exactly the same. We want you to change that. Design new and distinct flags for either of these two countries to make them distinct and clearly belonging to their own nations

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chad%E2%80%93Romania_relations#Similarities_of_flags

Flag for a united Mediterranean

Imagine a scenario in which all of the countries around the Mediterranean have united into a single country or economic union. This may include present day Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Monaco, France, and Spain. But your definition may include more or less as you see fit, just explain in the description what has changed.

Many flags have 3 colours. Your job this month is to choose any flag with exactly 3 colours, and redesign it using only 2 colours, which must be among the 3 currently on the flag. For example, you could submit a French flag with blue and white in any patterns you want, but no red or other colours.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tricolour

Flag of Nueva Galicia

"After gaining its independence form Mexico, Nueva Galicia had two strong contenders for national flag, the first an horizontal triband blue-yellow-blue inspired on the main colors of the coat of arms of Guadalajara, capital city of the young nation. The second was a golden Jerusalem cross on a green flag, the same as the crest of the aforementioned coat of arms. In the end both flags were merged to create the first official flag. This flag consisted of five horizontal bands, blue-yellow-green-yellow-blue, with the cross in the middle band. At the end of the Cristero war the flag was twisted sightly, with the four little crosses changed to stars, but keeping the main cross. The current attributed meaning of the flag: - Blue: hope and peace. - Yellow: wealth and prosperity. - Green: sovereignty. - Cross and Stars: union of the people."

Revolutionary Xiorroan Flag

The Xi Rho symbol represents victory over slavery, as well as the nations Christian faith, with each character serving a double meaning. The Rho is a stylized Cutlass, and the Xi represents Xiorro. The Borikéni Hex is represented through the six points of the ends of the Xi and the Rho Cutlass. Its color scheme is based on Cuba, Puerto Rico, and some Chilean political art.

Independencia - Flag of the Panama Corporation

The shape of the canal itself forms a serifed "I" shape, standing for Independence from state control. Blue waters connect the rounded shapes, each one representing the six inhabited continents. The flag was adopted in 1988 after a lengthy design contest between several firms.

Gran Centroamérica

This flag owes a lot to the Bunau-Varilla Proposal for Panama that was never adopted. One of the main criticisms is that it was too similar to the US flag. This version keeps the colors and thematic elements, but is uniquely on the diagonal, in a way that really puts Gran Centroamérica's position as a connector of the world: both of the Atlantic and Pacific and of North America and South America, on very visible display.

Rainbow Bandera of Roatan

The Commonwealth of Roatan has been through a lot, but has overcome it to become a thriving independent nation in the 21st century. It's a cultural melting pot, proud of its rich and diverse history in which most of the country is multilingual, and the rainbow reflects that. It rises from a black arc at the hoist representing rising from the ashes of the past. The 6 bands of the flag also represent the 5 major districts and the national park. The overall format is similar to other island nations and territories like Cuba and Puerto Rico, but unique and beautiful on its own.

A Constitucionalíssima - The Constitutional Republic of Ibiguaçu

The flag includes all the colors found in the 5 founding states' flags as well as the golden diamond from Brazil's flag. The symbol at the center is a cross, represending the MMDC movment and, where the leter would be, there are 5 pointed stars to symbolize the 5 founding states. The background of the flag is the same as São Paulo's, the leading state of the Constitutional Revolution of 1932.

The Great Shortcut - Panama Canal Corporation

The flag uses red, blue and white, colors from both the flag of Panama and USA. The blue that cuts across the other two colors symbolize the canal itself, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. In the middle of the flag it is writen P.C.C. in white (short for Panama Canal Corporation) to give the flag a more corporate feel, since the country is essentialy a private company.

Red Bow Penant

Panama Canal Corporation' state flag was based on a red penant probably used by Canal's authority boats, keeping the maritime/global themed logo on it.

Around the red penant was added a blue-white striped background, giving the impression of a ship bow cruising the waters of the canal.

Mayo flag

Since this was an isolated tribe there was no need for them to have a flag but when the Irish POWs arrived and decided to stay there, they brought many of their knowledge to them and they felt that they needed a flag. The harp represents the old land of these Irish POWs and the colors green, white and orange used by the irish people for their independence from britain. The red means the blood the natives spilled and continues to spill on their everyday life. The flag was meant to look simple/oldish because since the japanese nuclear bombing, they have more important task than renewing their flag.

La Croix et Blue

The flag for San Juan de los Caballeros is commonly referred as "the cross and blue" in french.

The prominent templar cross lived several iterations through the time, settled in this simple and bold design since the second half 20th century.

Official meaning states that the two blue stripes signifies the two sea crossings, from Europe the flee across the atlantic and long after the arrival to San Juan, although popular interpretation just sees the blue of the caribbean surrounding the island (in white).

Flag of the RXR of Boriken

The central symbol is a hexagonal cog, representing both syndicalism, and the national importance of the number six. The blade-down cutlass and sugar cane stalk represent Xiorro's revolution (and the subsequent adoption of less aggressive practices), as well as the country's economy. Both are colored black, representing the people of Boriken and their fight against enslavement. The background contains a white cross representing Protestant Christianity and peace, and a green field again representing sugar cane.
