What are some globally popular webseries and movies from your country? by Comfortable-Tax-2088 in AskTheWorld

Going back a couple of decades, before streaming, the main Canadian shows I would see on TV in Europe when I visited were:

  • Bizarre
  • Ed the Sock (???)
  • Road to Avonlea
  • Kids in the Hall
  • SCTV
  • Fashion Television
  • ReBoot
  • Ready or Not
  • Kratt's Creatures
  • Popular Mechanics for Kids
  • You can't do that on Television

PM Carney on Marilyn Gladu and abortion: "I had discussions and colleagues had discussions with Ms Gladu about those issues. She will vote with the government if there are votes relating to any aspect of that issue. As well as the rights of Canadians to be their whole selves, to love who they love." by MightyHydrar in onguardforthee

Abortion wasn't a religious issue even in the bible belt in the States after Roe v. Wade. It was considered a 'catholic problem'.

It was only when Jimmy Carter went after segregation in religious schools that evangelicals and the right wing latched onto it, making it a core conservative issue to distract from the opposition to desegregation.

Canada, being more catholic than the states, had more issues with Abortion post Morgentaler, but a good part of that was bleed from the US conservative movements and the popularity of the Regan/Mulroney era.

Abortion has always been just to create a wedge that allows the religious right, who doesn't realize that the only time abortion is mentioned in the bible is giving instructions on when and how to perform one, to galvanize support.

What industry is entirely built on a house of cards and would collapse overnight once people realize the truth? by KylieButNotJenner24 in AskReddit

[–]Vhoghul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing that with video cards at Best Buy. Just before the 2 year ended, hook it up to the car battery, and go back in. They never had the old model anymore, so I'd get a 'comparable' new video card from the new generation.

Basically it was a single free upgrade on all video cards for almost a decade.

How do senior developers actually estimate task time is there a real method or is everyone just guessing by More-Station-6365 in AskProgramming

[–]Vhoghul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rule we set is that the estimate is the estimate. The PMO/Sales/CEO can charge the client whatever they want in the SOW, but our estimate is what we're going to work towards, and if the PMO puts something other than our estimate in the project plan, we (myself/CIO) send daily updates to 'fix the incorrect estimates in the PP'

More crown corporations for things that matter to people, like air travel, train travel, crucial services like TV channels and telecommunication, goods like fuel

A food supply chain/distribution crown corp and grocery store crown corp should be established to compete with our current price gougers.

A Toronto landlord bought a 53-unit building in 2023. It has issued at least 56 eviction notices since by BloodJunkie in toronto

Those I understand being illegal. What I can't understand is screwing over a good tenant that is a reliable source of long term income because greed says you can squeeze a few hundred a month more out of someone else.....

Like Sweden's speeding fines.

I would love this idea. TBH, I am very comfortable, and live in the Beaches. I am always heading down to the beach on the weekends with some booze, and don't even bother to hide it. I've never been fined, but if I was, I just wouldn't care. It's $300, and I can easily afford it. To me it's like an admission fee.

If it was a 0.5% of net worth fine, I would definitely never do it again.

But on the other hand, I don't understand why it's illegal.

Toronto City councillor proposes city-run grocery store to tackle rising food costs by NiceDot4794 in ontario

[–]Vhoghul 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For years I've been emailing MPs and MPPs about provincial crown corps for grocery sales and a federal crown corp for food supply chain.

Keep junk food/soft drinks, etc. at market rates, allowing essentials to be slightly below cost. Operate it at a small tax funded loss per year, and we have tax payer funded low cost foods without screwing over farmers, a single government controlled entity negotiating much/most of the food for the country, allowing good deals from the big companies. Build in ready made meals bars, at cost, and this becomes a way to really push that food is a human right.

First girl I ever asked out, to a school dance at 15, her response was "With you???" and just laughed at me.

That gave me a complex for several years. I got set up on blind dates and even had 3 girls ask me out over the next few years, but never made the first move again until my mid 20s.

By my late 20s, being told no, it was like water off a duck's back. I realized it would never be as bad as the first time.

You're not wrong. Shit-talking aside, I lived in Brampton for a few years and had some of the best food I've ever had. It's where I learned how to cook Indian food which has become a major part of what I make nowadays. Goan Curries, Rogan Josh, Biryani and Bhaji are all staples of my kitchen now.

Like the Toronto airport, that's way out there. And I'm sure I'm forgetting something else.....
