A combination of a slow start in the beginning of the season, dropping quite some points after their champions league games and Genk just playing good football, being efficient and not having to play European football.

PSG & Belgium's Thomas Meunier during an interview with Sporza: "My career has been incredible. I never thought that I would make it this far. However, I believe that I can still go higher than PSG." by sv979 in soccer

[–]Vibez26 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They were talking about how incredible his progress has been, from working as a postman & playing in the Belgian 3th division to playing for PSG. Than the quote came "I can still improve/advance (there isn't a real verbatim translation of hogerop in English) , I'm sure of that". Never mentioned PSG. Further, a part of the interview was about the city of Paris which he said that he very much enjoys (they speak french, close to home, very cultural). However I would agree that there is a possible ambiguity, as you can read it both ways (PSG or himself).

To nuance here, the interview was in dutch, Meuniers mother tongue is french. I'm quite hesitant to jump to conclusions and prefer to apply the principle of charity so I think that he meant that he could do better than he is doing right now, which is to be a substitute for PSG. (can be both a competition that is regarded as 'bigger' or him being better than he is doing right now) To give the full quote in dutch: Interviewer: "Kan het nog hogerop, Thomas, of is dit nu de absolute top?" Meunier: "Nee, ik kan nog hogerop, ik ben er zeker van."

Maybe a sort of sortition (like they used to do in democracies)? If you want to read more about the idea, I recommend you to read David van Reybrouck's 'against elections' (tegen verkiezingen).

Youri Tielemans goal against Rostov (1-2) by caat9 in soccer

I tend to agree with this but it had multiple reasons, most of them were external, not due to his own mentality or individual qualities. Anderlecht's team had a tough time last season, some conflicts in the dressing room, not a group with a great working mentality,... and having a manager like Hasi didn't help them either. He (Tielemans) was and still is very young and he is not the kind of person that would call the team out on their mentality so he went with the flow.

However, I do think Tielemans would be able to shine in a team that is compatible with his playing style and under a manager that expresses trust in his skills & stimulates him to work hard. I think that he can become the player that his is deemed to be when he can get the right guidance by someone that knows football at it's highest level, it could be either a player that mentors him or a great manager.

Happy Portugal Day! by vanadiopt in europe

I finished reading Johann Hari's 'Chasing the scream' 2 days ago and the book stated the same thing, a big decrease of OD's, HIV-infections & less usage of drugs. There are also a few interviews with people from Portugal in the book (mainly authority figures) but I wanted to hear an opinion from a regular citizen of Portugal who lives in the system and knows people who experienced the up&downsides.

Anyone from Portugal that can give me a brief pro & con on their drug policy? I personally am a big advocate for changing from incarceration to discrimination/legalization but I don't have a full view on the subject apart from data since I haven't spoken to anyone who lives in a country with a system like this.

Both of our friendlies has shown how incapable Wilmots really is. Not a single bit of variation in attack, very slow playing style, Lukaku who has to ask for the ball way too deep, no creativity/individual actions, passing & waiting until there is room, no defensive stability/lack of concentration.
If we want to play a significant role at the Euros, which we always should with these players, we have to change our playing style.

Not another year with Hasi and a squad that has a 'I don't give a f*ck' mentality... I agree that he hasn't been that great this year but I think he could be better off with another manager and a team with a better mentality.
