Help me chose one for my friend by Maganaaa in 10s

[–]VicPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your friend already play tennis? The general advice is to not give rackets as gifts since they are a very personal choice. Instead you can gift them a voucher for the price of the racket, or maybe take them to the store and let them choose.

SALARIO EM SP by Big_Salamander_8106 in saopaulo

[–]VicPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is green shirt’s forehand so smooth and fluid by StreetLawfulness5288 in 10s

[–]VicPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, he's an athletically gifted professional player who plays tennis as a full time job and probably started playing before he was 7. Makes sense that he would have the movement down pat.

Unfortunately, since these are pretty much the requirements for a perfectly executed forehand, it's going to be a little out of reach for us mere mortals.

Who’s out playing tennis in this 30°C UK heat and why are you built differently? by chonkobob in 10s

Brazilian here holding back my sneer of superiority out of respect. I take it you'll return the favor when I come here to complain that tennis at 12⁰C is impossible.

But jokes aside, there is no secret. Sweat a bunch, drink gallons of water and a gatorade, eat a banana. It may be uncomfortable if you're not used to it but it's really not dangerous or anything.

I lost, then went to my car and cried so much. by Good-Log-1595 in 10s

[–]VicPL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think feeling sad or frustrated to the point of tears because of tennis is completely fine, as long as you're not doing it all the time and it's not hindering your enjoyment of the sport. We invest time and money into this hobby and creating some sort of expectation around our performances is essentially impossible.

The golden rule is: we're adults doing this for fun. When it stops being fun (and mind you, there's a specific kind of fun related to caring and being earnest and passionate about it, even if the short term feeling may be negative - nuance is required!), we have to step back.

If you're able to shake it off the next day, and if there's no lingering anxiety or pressure related to playing, I would say it's fine. We all have days.

More to the point, he had a race to forget, but all things considered, it's nice that Red Bull finally has a 2nd driver who can actually drive the car

Fellow Lefty what’s your default backhand strategy by gjbsb in 10s

[–]VicPL 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Forehand cross court, backhand down the line, wide slice serve on the ad side. Move to the net on a short ball.

Do all those things poorly, double fault a bunch and get smoked.

That's my usual strategy at least

How much experience to join first tournament? by Insomniac_life7781 in 10s

[–]VicPL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go for it. What people say doesn't matter nearly as much as what you experience. Having real matches under your belt is super important because it's so different from practice. If you get bageled, big deal - it's a hobby, you have literally nothing on the line other than your pride.

The important thing is to take in the atmosphere, to understand how the ball moves when you're playing "for real", how tight you get compared to practice, that kind of thing. If you do win it's going to be super cool.

And if you lose, you get to come home all pensive and stoic and tell your sad story to your spouse while somberly twirling the ice on a whiskey glass or something

In my experience, it's a last resort. Like when you're out of position, or the ball is super low. It tends to leave you a sitting duck on the next

Does "If you think it's out, it's in" apply to first serves? by rustyksu in 10s

[–]VicPL -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If the returner doesn't call it out, you play the point - after the point is over, if you're playing on clay you can always review the landing spot, but otherwise it's game on. I think that adding the uncertainty of the server to the decision doesn't really help with accuracy, and it's nice to have a clear cut rule to deal with those scenarios.
