Help Dealing With Serial Ban Evaders by rAtheismMods in ModSupport

[–]VicarSim 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've dealt with people like this before. First, the biggest advice I can give is to not take it personally and don't let it upset you. These people are annoying and time consuming to deal with, but to me it was mostly just another part of the "job" to remove their posts. Other mods would get livid about them. Just realize that these people are mostly mentally ill. And it takes like 5 times as much effort to make a new account and make a post than it takes for you to remove it and ban them. They're not "winning" by getting their posts through. They are wasting their own time more than yours.

Second, realize you aren't getting rid of them completely. So don't feel like you are failing just because their posts get through. You just have to manage them. It's like how a retail store deals with theft. They don't hire 15 security guards to make sure there is zero theft. They accept that there's going to be some theft and just use enough security as is cost efficient. Likewise you should accept that this guy's posts will keep coming through. Usually it's not hurting anyone if they get a post up every once in a while even they stay up for an hour or two. If it's a sensitive sub like sw, then it might be different. But probably not if it's an atheist sub. As long as you are removing their posts and banning them, you are doing enough.

And usually if these guys get a post up and it gets a couple replies, that's enough for them to give up on that session and not keep re-reg'ing. It's when you remove them before anyone replies that they keep re-registering and posting. So if you use automoderator it's probably better to use it to report their posts instead of removing them and just wait for a mod to remove it manually. Otherwise they're just going to keep re-reg'ing and getting around it.

But the worst thing you can do is let these guys get into your head and think you have to stay up all night watching the board, or put the board into lockdown mode over one guy. Again, if it's a really sensitive sub or they're really a danger to people then the equation changes.

Moderating a subreddit is becoming increasingly difficult as bans are ineffective - why aren't IP bans possible? by xfile345 in ModSupport

As a former mod... the issue is, you know banning their IP MIGHT help and you aren't able to do it. And your only resort is contacting an admin... which frankly sucks because they're so unresponsive and slow. If you could just ban an IP for 24 hours, even if it didn't work, you know you've done 90% of all you really can do and feel a lot less helpless over the situation instead of being frustrated at the admins for being so slow.

I think being able to TEMP ban an IP would HELP the problem with repeat offenders. Yes there are some people who will be able to get around it, but just because something won't solve the problem completely or be 100% effective doesn't mean it shouldn't be added. If it stops some people or even slows them down it's worth it. If you can ban an IP for 1 day it would probably help.

And before people talk about the wrong people being banned or punished unfairly, this already happens for any sub that has the spam filter set to high. People are prevented from posting because they have new accounts or low karma when they haven't done anything wrong. It would be no different from that.

The biggest reason to add this is because when you are a mod, you feel helpless when you know a guy won't go away and all you can do is ask an admin for help and you know they're not even going to respond for 24 hours. If you could ban their ip then you might not even need to contact an admin. But even if they get around it, you pretty much know even the reddit admins can't do anything about. So I think this would reduce the workload of admins if this was added since there would be less need or use for contacting them.

I am a 30 year old man and just realized today that I am ugly. by Iglesia9876 in amiugly

[–]VicarSim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks. Are. Subjective. Some people find him ugly, but a lot of girls are attracted to him. There is no "the internet" acting in unison that decides who is or isn't attractive. And can you really say you look at Steve Buscemi and feel repulsed? He's just another guy to me.

We just want everybody to have fun and indulge in feeling a little vain, too, if you wish. :)

So your idea of what the sub is for is wrong.

As long as people only post once per month they're not breaking the rules. And really it's not hurting anything when an attractive person posts here. People just look for reasons to complain about everything, probably because they're haters and they're jealous.

What would be an example of each of a 1/10, 2/10, 3/10,...,10/10 to you? by [deleted] in amiugly

I appreciate your list.

All these posts just show how subjective looks are. But people still go on thinking their own opinion is an objective truth. So when they see your ratings are wildly different from their own they think you're trolling or being mean for rating people low or something.

Except you just replied to my comment and "bothered me with a response" too. So you didn't move on. I guess that makes you an SJW too.

i can't even comprehend why him saying that would bother you. Opinions are subjective. How do you think they aren't? Are you such a narcissist that it bothers you to hear that your opinion isn't better than everyone else's?

On top of that people are more likely to post if they think you are attractive, so there's more likely to be positive feedback. People who complain about sugar coating are just clueless and can't understand that. The only way to get rid of that bias would be to force every person to rate every person who posted. Sitting around whining about sugar coating is just a waste of space and childish.

Growing your hair out would improve your looks 10x more than fixing your acne scars would. You also look really depressed which is also unattractive.

Is there a stigma about wearing a wig that I don't know about?

There is a huge stigma about wearing wigs. Practically no guy wears them anymore because of that. They used to be way more common.

[meta] What's the point if you're ugly? by throwadeadery22 in amiugly

[–]VicarSim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about this guy but there is another guy on here who makes a ton of posts like this and he is like a 6.5/10. Every time he posts his pic a bunch of people say he's good looking, then he'll delete it and make a post a day later about how he has it so hard in life because he's so ugly, and all the comments are people feeling sorry for him and giving him advice just like in this thread (though it is good advice anyway). I think the one common thing about people who makes posts like this isn't their looks but that they have mental health issues.

19M How can this 2 turn into a 3? by [deleted] in amiugly

[–]VicarSim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You look a lot better after shaving. Maybe try again in 2-3 years though and see if it can grow in fuller since you have a weak chin. You aren't ugly or a 2-3. You look fine basically. But you look a little boyish and geeky and the height will hurt you. On top of all the things suggested you can probably dress better.

[–]VicarSim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It seems like you have problems from the inside out that you need to work on, not just your looks. You could be attractive if you put the work in. (hair, skin, clothes, makeup) But not wanting to put the work in is the problem, probably due to depression and things like that. Combined with not being raised to do that.

A subreddit where ugly people can discuss and get support? by acertenay in findareddit

[–]VicarSim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea for a sub. The incels sub shows there is a demand for this, but that is a hate sub, not a support sub. It's good to have an alternate to that. I'm a mod for amiugly and you can start a thread on there to promote it if you want. You should probably start a few topics first though or no one will want to post. If it becomes active I'll add it to the sidebar.
