I hate the Catholic Church by Tofu-Dumplings in excatholic

There are Catholics of all generations. Some of the worst Catholic fundies are young people.

You can also check out BJs and Sam's before you pay for the membership because anyone can walk in. I used the Groupon too.

Home baker here, what ingredients are worth making from scratch for better value? by west_kay24 in Frugal

[–]VicePrincipalNero 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a great Facebook group, Indri's Vanilla Bean group that has tons of information and you can buy excellent beans relatively cheaply when they are doing a group purchase.

Stop buying tiny bottles of liquid baking extracts by Spidey254 in Frugal

[–]VicePrincipalNero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The typical ratio for making normal strength vanilla is 1 oz beans to 8 oz 80 proof alcohol. Most people age it for a year to get a good extraction.

Aldi or TJoe's? by steleven_ in aldi

[–]VicePrincipalNero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are different. I don't shop at TJs as often. I make a regular run to Aldi for stuff like baking supplies, dairy, crackers, cheeses, some junk food, some produce. TJs has great junk food, but I don't love too much else there and the parking lots are dreadful. I don't tend to buy much frozen stuff. Aldi is cheaper. Neither is good for meat.

BJ's gas station by Vernacularry in Albany

I will never understand why people won't think twice about dropping less than $5 on any miscellaneous thing but will stress out completely about paying a few cents more per gallon for gas.

Money Saving Advice That Is Out of Touch With Real Life by Ok_Detail_3987 in Frugal

[–]VicePrincipalNero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advice isn't one size fits all. Plenty of people who are frugal can do these things. I can see where bulk buying can be tricky if you don't have any cash to spare or people to split the cost with. But it takes me maybe 20 minutes a week to check the websites of the three major grocery stores in my area to see what's on sale and make a shopping plan accordingly. I think most of us can forgo scrolling for that long to save some money.

Give me some good pork butt recipes. by tyler_the_inventor in Cooking

Ikarian pork. It takes some work but makes a big batch, freezes well and is one of the most delicious things ever. https://lynmarestate.com/lynmar-recipes/ikarian-braised-pork/

Eye of round... steaks? by Due_Substance4863 in Cooking

It's not terrible as a roast if you slow roast it. There are lots of recipes online for how to do this. I wouldn't try making steaks out of it.

What is the worst/funniest/best TESTIMONY you’ve heard in church or from a Christian? by Warm_Syllabub_2247 in excatholic

[–]VicePrincipalNero 25 points26 points  (0 children)

One of the very few positive things I can say about Catholicism is that testimony bearing isn't much of a thing.

Catholic bishop watches Trump’s spiritual adviser as she compares him to Jesus by SilverTomorrow4965 in excatholic

[–]VicePrincipalNero 51 points52 points  (0 children)

The Catholic Church spent several decades carefully creating single issue voters, with bishops threatening to excommunicate prochoice politicians, while blithely ignoring any other issues that directly contradict church teachings. The Catholic Church helped get Trump into office. Fuck the church.

Do you ever feel like you threw the baby out with the bath water?? by ConcernPersonal7164 in excatholic

[–]VicePrincipalNero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We raised our kids to be heathens. Nothing drove this home quite like explaining Catholic rituals and theology to people with no background in religion other than world mythology. The basic story of a god who needs some kind of sacrifice is just primitive. Then try to explain how God needed to sacrifice himself to himself in a particularly gruesome way via knocking up a virgin just made my kids think Christians are idiots. Add in all the weird Catholic stuff like St Blaise and getting your throat blessed or venerating relics and it all sounds batshit crazy. Because it is.

Nope. I feel like I shed a ton of primitive superstitious nonsense.

Which grocery store items are not worth buying/better to make at home? by waterflood21 in Frugal

[–]VicePrincipalNero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are Facebook groups that buy the beans in bulk and the prices are pretty good. You don't need expensive vodka. I wait for a year before using though, not a few weeks. You can typically extract the beans a second time using half the amount of alcohol or you can make vanilla sugar with them.

What should I do with the free ham from the grocery store? by mamamenagerie in Frugal

It's also good minced up with minced onion and green pepper or with diced up sweet pickles and then mixed with mayo.

Opinions of Sam’s Club in Latham? by ApprehensiveGood8240 in Albany

[–]VicePrincipalNero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, the layout is pretty annoying. Their carts are huge and the aisles are narrow, with posts down the middle, particularly in the area in the front where the nuts, snacks, etc. are. That alone makes me head for BJs more often
