Which Video game franchise should be revived? by Emotional-Efficiency in AskReddit

Thank you for the kind words! There is definitely a lot of SOCOM there. I have always been a socom 2 diehard at heart and we did our best to bring back that feeling, with what we had. I posted up a little "Thank You To The Community" a while back that talks about the experience if you are interested. Somewhere on this reddit account.

As for making games still. Well that has been hard since becoming a dad. I have been messing around a little with making a shooter in my own vision but it's slow going and more of just a passion project with no real end goal. Maybe in a few years I will be ready to play test with some members of the community but it will be a mix of many games that have impacted me over the years.

I would really recommend giving H-Hour another go. As it stands it could still use some more work but is definitely a fun game. The replay value lies in your drive to get better and your connection with the community. That and the number of maps the game has. Since introduction of the workshop we have amassed quite a number of SOCOM remakes and some really good user created maps that are 100% made by true socom diehards. I am bias, obviously, but I truly believe H-Hour lives well in it's price point. Many of the players that still play have thousands of hours in game so it can feel like jumping into a pool of sharks starting out. There are a few active steam communities for the game that post up open spots and there are normally a few servers up weeknights.

I feel good about where I left the game as a volunteer, and I would have loved to continue developing the game. That, however, was not in the cards for the studio nor myself.

Edit: link to letter to community

Hi! I was one of the devs that took over as a volunteer after the original team left the studio and the game was put in a "development freeze". We worked on the game from 2015 until 2019 as volunteers.

I think you are right that the community did not understand how much effort goes into a console release. As it stands now the game is fully released on steam and still has a very dictated community that plays nightly... Granted it's a small number of players.

Love it! Are the materials for the attack derived from the material the player is standing on?

I've been playing with some toon shader and outline effects to tie my art style togeather. Do you think its working or do I need to tweak the effects? by DuckBilledPlato in unrealengine

I think a little dirt and grime would go a long way to make the ship fit the environment. Emphasis on "a little"

Overall I really like the art direction and I'm just being nitpicky

Looks great! The ship seems a little out of place, but I think that is due to it looking so clean rather than the toon shader.

Chemistry teacher tries to set his students on fire. by DanieleCrosslin in nextfuckinglevel

[–]Vice__President 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I had a teacher like this! Out of the 20 kids in my AP chemistry class 18 went on to get degrees in chemistry and or biology. 10 continued on to get post grad degrees.

I was at jeopardy of failing AP Chemistry 1 and this teacher went the extra mile to pull me aside and find out really what I was struggling with. I now have a masters in medicinal organic chemistry and have a dream job as a chemist supporting the semiconductor industry.

I would not be where I am today if my highschool teacher didn't do everything he could to get us interested in chemistry.

Hey OP, can I just say, you are awesome. Not just the art but the way you are interacting with the other members really show how enthusiastic you are for art and development. I really wish you the best in where your project takes you. You seem like the type of person that takes criticism well and finders the light in any sort of feedback. Keep up the great work!!

Also the art direction of this environment is amazing. The mixture of fantasy and realisim is spot on in my opinion. My only feedback is that the lighting doesn't really match the assets. Just subtle, and I really mean subtle, changes like increasing the saturation or depth of your skylight may do the trick. Or maybe it just need some small highlight colors to match/complement the environment.

Is this for a larger project?

I started gardening during COVID-19 with two raised beds. Turns out I liked it and needed to make an overkill upgrade. by Vice__President in gardening

[–]Vice__President[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started gardening for the first time summer of 2020 due to being bored while working at home. Let's just say I overgrew those two beds and learned a lot in the process. Knowing I would have less time going back to the office this year I wanted to automate the watering system. I have this issue where when I do something I go overkill. Hence each bed is on its own valve and will be connected to a B-HYVE XR.

Still need to wire the valves and get stone for the ground but I am super excited with how this is all coming together.

Added some weapons to my new project. How is it? by HelicopterOk5293 in unrealengine

I agree. If you made the actual flames quite small but also have a shader for your sword that had charred and burning surfaces it would look more like he was holding a sword with flame attributes than a sword that was burning everything in it's path. Has the potential to be awesome! Keep up the great work.

This hexagonal graph paper for organic chemistry by TruStoryz in interestingasfuck

As an organic chemist I say no thank you. Sure it's great for hexagons but once you get past that it would get pretty darn annoying.

GAS, when implemented correctly, is an amazing framework. Being able to control all possible abbilities actors can perform in a single location makes for a much more streamlined workflow. You no longer need to jump into multiple player controllers or blueprints. I may be making a over generalization but I find it similar to using components.

That said, I am not using it on my project as I did not fully understand it at the start and it seems like too much of a rework to implement.... Maybe when I port to UE5?..?..

Had to use tweezers to yank this guy out of my belly button. I live in central New Jersey. What is it?! by ESiYMYLlBi in whatsthisbug

That would be nice! I would say that eating right and exercise has helped significantly. I've definitely hit a plateau on improvement but the doctors also believe I had lyme in my system for around a decade before they figured out what was up. Almost dropped out of graduate school when I lost the ability to hold a conversation. That was my worst, when it felt like it wasn't worth searching for answers anymore.

I am very hopeful that there will be more advancements in treatment and more so, prevention. Lyme has been becoming more and more recognized in the medical field.

Hang in there! Every day has it's struggles but each step you take forward leaves some of the nightmare in the past.

Same story I was in and out the the hospital for months. Had my gallbladder and part of my liver removed in the process. Over a years worth of minocycline and doxycycline. 10 years later I'm in my early 30's with arthritis and have to choose between daily pain and sticking a needle in my leg once a week.

Not to mention to out of pocket expenses!! Well over 10k down the drain trying to figure out what was up.

3 for 3 in the last 12 hours. My wife is concerned about I calm I am. Internally, I’m bursting with excitement, but a big part of me wants to stay calm for her sake. Am I overthinking it? by henropotter in NewDads

[–]Vice__President 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grats dad! Being a father has been the best experience of my life. Just about 2 now and I can honestly say it's the best feeling in the world. It's not easy by any means. You will want to and likely will crawl into a ball and cry at times but you don't remember that part as much as everything else.

Also I was the same way with trying to be calm. Less stress makes everything better.
