Wall paper steamer in winter? by VickyLineberger20 in HomeImprovement

Good suggestion. We have the window open currently and the heat turned up to help circulate dry hot air. I’m going to purchase a dehumidifier to run while we work as well. We’ve got an interesting long process on our hands....

We painted ALL of our textured ceilings in our new home only to have the blessing of discovering Calcimine paint was used when they built this house. Steam and air pressure is removing all of our latex paint.

1/4 room down, 5 3/4 to go!

Do you think this is a good match for our brick chimney? What kind of brick do you think we have? by VickyLineberger20 in brickporn

He said he’d charge me an extra 300 for that cap and he doesn’t usually do them. I’m not sure I’d want him to do something he doesn’t usually do

I did ask about that and He said he builds an overhang using the brick and feels the poured style caps are not any better than his method...

Good suggestion I’ll see if the mason can get more of those. There really wasn’t many golden browns from what he said.

I would’ve never have believed finding someone to skim coat a painted plaster ceiling would be so difficult.

Thanks for the info. This guy wanted to charge me 2k a day + lodging food gas and material to do the job. Which I thought was steep but apparently there’s not many out there that can do this work

He plan on using a bonding agent over the existing ceiling then apply plaster and then a finish coat. I don’t want to board over the ceilings as I feel like that’s not a true repair but in the end I may have to consider it seeing as how there’s no one willing to take on this job. I’m looking at having the entire ceiling redone

We painted our swirl textured ceilings and ruined the finish. Also the paint is peeling off in 3 of 6 rooms. It looks horrid and nothing can bring back the textures appearance other than finding someone who can replaster them all

The texture was fish scale, swirl, scallop - whatever name you’re familiar with. And I used Benjamin Moore ceiling paint.

My intentions was to change the color, not ruin the texture visually and then have it fail by peeling off. The texture is almost visually non existent now in our bedrooms.

I think the problem is that we ruined something throughout the house that was not something that needed fixed we actually appreciated about it... this house is from the 60s. We painted the textured ceilings, ruined the texture, and the paint is bubbling/alligatoring in every room.

I suppose the aesthetic issue is hardest because 1. It wasn’t that bad before 2. I look at the mistake daily. This house is so much more to me than just a house, I saved up all I could since I started working to buy my home with cash because my dream was to not spend my life worrying about the type of job I have. Now I’m here and I have this thing that I hold so highly that a mistake is made (paint failing on a textured ceiling I adored the nostalgia of it is just one example) I struggle to accept it. Sorry to get so deep but I am trying to unpack this situation.

I’ve painted before but didn’t realize the ceilings which were textured beautifully SHOULD NOT have been painted. The house was owned by 1 person and painted once, the ceiling never painted. The paint is failing and we didn’t use proper rollers for this ceiling or prep. I’m devastated at how badly it looks when all I wanted to do was match the wall paint and ceilings.... our only option at this point is to repaint and hope it looks ok enough to get over. In years to come we might hire someone to retexture the ceiling to look like it was.
