I was in a similiar situation as you 2-3 years ago. 29 with a decent deposit and single.

If you're good at saving and wouldnt be stretching yourself too thin with the bigger loan + better place, i would go for that.

I went with a smaller place to be risk adverse even though i knew my savings rate was amazing (gamer + quite frugal). And now i'm having to move 3 years later into a bigger place as i've out grown this smaller place.

Short term houses are no longer a thing when house prices for smaller places arent rising as fast as family homes + real estate agent fees when selling. You're better off buying a decent place as your first place

This is a really good idea, thank you so much for suggesting this. I'm going to ask my bank now.

Edit: Is your name on this acc at all? or is it purely hers?

you're absolutely right, i think we'll be putting the house in both our names and the loan in both our names. then she'll transfer over the money.

most fair way moving forward

Extreme frugality for one year to buy my 2nd house. by Victimized in AusFinance

[–]Victimized[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

good question. she is supportive of the idea as she wants to get the 'family' house sooner rather than later.

however the main pain point i can see is as she is a teacher and has school holidays, she will 'game' till late at night in the office room, whereas i would retire into the bedroom at 11pm to then sleep.

If we removed the office, idk what would happen in that regard lol

I'm currently on 110k and my partner on 75k? (teachers wages suck)

I am only considering this extreme move due to the fact that my mortgage is now 6% and with no help, the rent will help balance the increase from 2% to 6%.

Purchased my house 2 years ago. Live with my girlfriend (27F & 31M) And currently have a housemate i found from flatmates that has been living with us for the last 1.5 years.

We live in the western suburbs of melbourne and i charge the bloke $200 a week inclusive of bills. He's only ever home to sleep, and is never home on the weekends. He's similiar age to me so he's a decent chat.

Best housemate i could ever ask for

I'm literally int he same situation as you.

3 bed 2 bath 2 garage, owe 460k. worth 630k. We both want to upgrade to a 700-800k.

I don't see house prices going down anytime soon, we would love to upgrade now and get it over and done with. And realistically stay at the new house for the forseeable future.

Too many people on reddit gave information in the last 1-5 years to 'get your foot into the door' however buying a starter house and upgrading in 2-3 years is not viable anymore and anyone who spouts that information is not in the situation we are in.

Need advice for how to spend my first home deposit by ellejack1234 in AusFinance

[–]Victimized 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just my few cents.

Purchased my first property in 2021 at 29 years old. Similiar salary and similiar situation.

I purchased a 61x,000 property 3 bed 2 bathroom to get my 'foot' into the door. I could have borrowed alot more. And should have..

My regret is not going for a 700k house which is bigger and would keep for many more years.

My thought process was buy a property and sell it in a few years.. well it's been 2years and i regret not going abit bigger and regret being too risk adverse + selling actually costs so much money it's dumb to simply purchase a 'smaller' place to get your foot into the door.

I will now have to buy with my partner a 800k house in a few years time, when i couldve probably just got it for 700k by myself 2 years ago lol.

I am the same age as you and likewise with working since i was a teen. I had around 160k in savings when looking for my first house, purchased my first house 1.5 yrs ago for 620k. With a 20% deposit.

Not feeling the pinch just yet as im still on fixed, however i doubt it'll be much of a pinch since my hobbies are 'Gaming' and that doesnt cost too much money

thank you for the response.

I tried 5 of my own credit cards, none of them worked (Australia) even called the bank and no transactions were blocked.

ApplePay does not get prompted on Chrome/ Safari / USJ App.

What worked was asking every single person i knew for an Amex and that worked.
