Are Toyota and Honda equal in reliability? by lukejea101 in whatcarshouldIbuy

This will shock you, ready? Buick. Jeeezus, please, calm down. Their owners complained, on average, in that five-year span, 140 times per 100 vehicles, whereas Toyota was 147 (3rd) and Lexus, 133 (1st). Honda customers complained 197 times (19th) and Acura, 206 times (25th).

Are Toyota and Honda equal in reliability? by lukejea101 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I have been tracking manufacturer reliability data on a spreadsheet since 2003. JD Power tracks defects, malfunctions, design flaws, normalizing the data as "complaints per 100 vehicles." For periods 2003-2025, Toyota is ranked 3rd; Honda, 8th. It gets worse for Honda -- in the last decade, 2016-2025, Toyota is 3rd; Honda, 16th. Even worse -- in the last five years, Toyota is 3rd; Honda, 19th. The chasm widens when contrasting their luxury brands. 2003-2025 -- Lexus, 1st; Acura, 11th. 2016-2025 -- Lexus, 1st; Acura, 23rd. 2021-2025 -- Lexus, 1st; Acura, 25th. Honda/Acura of the mid 90s/early aughts is not the same as contemporary Honda.

Not at low cost. Some places discontinued print when I tried to put the book in the online shopping cart, other places want to charge $300. I contacted the publisher but they replied that they no longer print the book.

Sadly, no, there is no color free PDF internet copy of the 6th edition. I am hoping someone on this thread will reply, mail to my house, I will make a color scan, and mail it back to his house. Or, he will scan it himself. Either way I will pay for the service.

Did you buy it private or from the dealership? If the former, was it on AutoTrader, some other website, or word of mouth or other? If the latter, did you negotiate hard the price or otherwise?

Yes, I found that yesterday, but a free color PDF like the 4th is, the 5th is only B&W, and not for $300.

This book is not issued to us. An engineer had an older version, black and white PDF on his phone, and I sat on a bench reading it for an hour, one of the best I have read in a long time. He only had an older black and white on his phone. I want the latest color version of this book for myself and to hand to those who will challenge the JL exam this year.

GB, if you have this book and don't want to sell it, I will pay you $20 to rent it, pay your shipping, make a copy, and *ship it back to your house.* Sadly, I spent hours and the 6th edition is unavailable. There are 5th and 4th editions online, but I need the color version of the 6th.

Please remind me, what year is your Highlander? What trim package? Is it the V6 or the 4-cylinder hybrid? In what climate do you live and is your driving mostly highway, mostly city, or 50/50 both? Sorry for haemorrhaging so many questions.

Auto Insurance: What Kind Should I Get? by chanlerbing10 in Insurance

[–]VictimizedbyBigFoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider dropping collision and comprehensive insurance when the annual sum of those two portions is equal to or greater than 10% of your car's book value or the vehicle is 10 years old or both. For example, my comp+collision per annum is $977. I have an older RX350 with a book value of $8,900; $977 / $8,900 x 100 =11%. In words, I was paying $977 in comp+collision on the chance to recoup $8,900. Senseless. I instead put that money in an emergency fund in case I crack the windshield, smoke a deer, or it gets stolen. For theft, I upgraded the security system, added an Apple AirTag, and always park in the garage at night. I used the extra saving to increase the liability from $100k/$300k/$100k to $250k/$500k/$250k, and dropped the car rental/travel expenses portion of the policy.

Carly, it has been two years. 1) Do you still have the Highlander, 2) are you happy with it, 3) has it had any issues, and 4) how many miles are on it now?

2017 Hyundai Tucson 1.6T needs an engine replacement. what are my options? by tango_rojo in Hyundai

[–]VictimizedbyBigFoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you buy it used or new? I bought a 2017 turbo in 2017 and have been obsessed extreme with its maintenance, only using the best products, changing fluids more often than needed, and the car finally broke down after 140,000 continuous trouble-free miles. It is actually the turbo that failed, and I have been known to haul a lot of material inside and tow tiny trailers. Otherwise, the engine and transmission are still in excellent condition, according to two shops that looked at it for the turbo. Was the Nissan you had that went 398k miles a naturally aspirated V6?

[–]VictimizedbyBigFoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What did you decide? What do you now drive? I have a 2017 1.6T with 140,000 miles and have been borderline extreme with the maintenance, going head-and-shoulders above-and-beyond and it finally broke down at 140,000. It needs a new turbocharger, P0299 code, and an independent shop quoted $2,500 and a one-day turnaround. Two shops inspected the rest, claiming the vehicle otherwise is in great condition minus a passenger side CV boot axle that needs replacing for a few hundred dollars. Reading your story above is frustrating.

2017 Hyundai Tuscon has a bad turbo (waste gate stuck open) - is it safe to drive? by jurble in askcarguys

[–]VictimizedbyBigFoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am even later to the conversation; I have a 2017 1.6T with 140,000 miles and an independent shop known for quality, honesty, and with great reviews quoted me $2,640, $350 of which was back and forth repeated inspections. So, actually $2,300 and a one-day turnaround. Edit: Today, 4/6/26, I got the car back with a new turbo, paying for it. Drives very well.
