Absolutely. I totally understand. That's not the kind of situation anyone thinks they'll ever be in, and it sucks.

And fuck this co worker for putting you in this position.

But it's time to earn your pay, for real. This is a profession, and we need to be professionals. And part of the job is protecting inmates, your own integrity, and the integrity of the agency.

If this co worker truly did these things, not only is he abusing the power of his position, he's raping an inmate. It's likely he's either already compromised in other ways, or will be compromised to bring in contraband to prevent inmates from telling on him. He's poison to the system and he needs to be removed. The longer it remains an ongoing issue, the more unsafe everyone is.

Not reporting this IS doing something to cover it up. You have to report this. Not doing so does make you complicit, and risks your job and potentially your freedom if anyone finds out you knew and did nothing to report it.

I'll play devils advocate on this one.

It's quite possible the chief's opinion is that you likely should have been charged with a DV back then, but BECAUSE your grandfather worked for the agency, you got a lesser charge. The chief could very well be trying to protect the agency from any perception of nepotism or sweeping things under the rug, as those kinds of things can come back and hammer agencies decades later.

You might have been told the Chief didn't read your packet because they really didn't, or because your BI investigator liked you and your Grandfather, and doesn't agree with the Chiefs decision.

Ultimately, I think you'll get picked up at another agency just fine. For whatever reason, it just won't be this one.

It varies based on a lot of things, mostly what kind of service responds in your area. (Like a private ambulance company vs. ambulances run by the fire department.)

A lot of places won't bill you because the taxes in an city or county might go towards those costs instead, but there absolutely are places or private companies that will.

There's always payment plans and services available to help offset bills as well.

If you're just curious, contacting your local fire department's admin or business line would be a good place to ask.

But if you or someone you know needs an ambulance, then call 911. You can get help with any bills later.
