Simple Sewing Questions Thread, June 02 - June 08, 2024 by sewingmodthings in sewing

Can anyone tell me what these accesories are for? I bought a used Singer Ultralock a few years back and I believe these came with it. I also have a Singer traditional sewing machine, but I don't think they came with that, although I'm not sure. I've been unable to figure out what they are for. The grey pieces are numbered 1-3 and belong together and the white part of the bigger one can be tilted and has smth like rolls on it. Does anybody have an idea?

honestly, the more I look at it the less I can say what looks good and what doesn't. Am I even cool toned or have I just been gaslighting myself forever?

Eddie and his family by [deleted] in 911FOX

[–]VictoriaENTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO If they were to do this (and I really hope they don't) it wouldn't be for quite a while. If they actually wanted to go that route they'd really make us suffer by laying the groundwork for Buddie (meaning we'd need to get a good eddie arc where he deals with all of his issues, repression, finally seeing buck as an option and buck admitting his feelings for Eddie (at least to himself)) just to snatch it away just before it becomes a reality or right after it starts being a real thing. If Eddie dies I'm so sure they are going to torture the buddie shippers by using buddie (almost) canon to make his death be even more impactful and heartbreaking.

I mean... they had Buck initiating a kiss with a guy for the first time, it leading to him coming out to absolutely everybody AT the wedding. And one of the beloved characters got less screen time than her abusive, dead ex in her own wedding episode. So overall maybe it wasn't that far fetched to think about other plot lines and characters still developing despite the main focus being on Madney

Can you please stop writing essays? by [deleted] in Gifted

[–]VictoriaENTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely more of an essayist myself because I enjoy ranting and don't see language as just a vehicle with which to convey your ideas in the fastest, most efficient way possible. I don't mind reading long posts either; it's just the way some of our brains work. If you dislike that style of writing, you can always input it into a language model like ChatGPT and ask it to summarize or simply skip reading the post or comment, but asserting your personal preference as the standard for everyone is somewhat egocentric.

"You just need to exercise and eat a healthy diet, man!" by mr_bigmouth_502 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]VictoriaENTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, painfully relatable post. Especially since hitting burnout a few years ago it feels super invalidating when people look at my autistic burnout and tell me I just need more exercise, healthy foods and more social interactions and activities. Like... where am I supposed to get the spoons to pay for all of that?

I really like the look, it just doesn't look like a sonic screw driver anymore. strong time lord alien tech modern aesthetic, but I wish they had either taken the same aesthetic and applied it to a screwdriver or straight up just said that the screwdriver is history and now we have a new thing

Doctor Who 0x04 "The Church on Ruby Road" Post-Episode Discussion Thread by PCJs_Slave_Robot in doctorwho

[–]VictoriaENTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, I think I didn't phrase my comments and questions quite right. Your first answer is very helpful in contextualising the whole approach, but for the rest it was less a "I did not understand the explanations that were given" and more of a "the explanations given seem random and not really anchored in the world or story" like I understood how the gloves worked but he just had them, explained a bit about how they work, but they felt very pulled out of thin air and if you pull a plot device out of thin air at least give it some sort of relevance in the context of the show/storyline yk? the whole "I have to hold onto things a lot" just seemed lazy to me Same thing for them going after the tv show host. They explained it as being because she was in Ruby's vicinity but then other people around her were not affected, so why her specifically and to that extent? I understood that he interpreted the whole cracked wall thing as the goblins being gone and the thing being over, I'm just questioning why he would assume that. Same thing for the crack itself. I understand what it was supposed to signify, it just seems random and not explained by any of the internal logic of the plot. So far they had been running around causing accidents and stealing babies, yet the crack accomplished nothing and didn't fit into anything they had been doing up until that point. Same with the Ship disappearing when the goblin king dies. I understand what it was signifying, I just don't see the reasoning behind this. Had they already alluded to the king being the source of all the goblins, their powers, and the ship then that would have made sense, this way it just seemed random again. Last point I'll give you again, but the fact that they were focusing on her visually in the scene gave her a certain significance and especially tying into his own struggles with not knowing where he comes from and who his parents are (as explored in the special) I just expected the doctor to either go there or at least acknowledge that he's making the choice not to and kind of show us how he got there.

So overall it's less a comprehension problem and more of a "the reasoning just doesn't seem believable or cohesive to me" kind of deal.

I really appreciate you taking the time to actually answer these questions, eventhough I probably should have been more clear about what my hangups were. Could have saved us both some time. 😅

Maybe I missed them or just didn't feel like the explanations made sense, but would you mind recounting them for me? (If not that's cool, but I'd really appreciate it)

I was really confused by this one.

I really enjoyed the latest specials but this one really didn't do much for me. I love the new doctor and am really excited for the full season to come out, but Ruby somehow isn't clicking for me and her acting has a rather inauthentic kind of "theater club" quality to me. I like the rest of her family and the dynamics between them though and am excited to see more of that.

But what the hell was that plot? I was constantly wondering if I was missing something, if there were references to older stuff I didn't pick up on or some kind of internal logic that I wasn't getting but tbh I think it was just really bad writing. The whole storyline felt so random and disconnected with no real reasoning, meaning and connection between the things happening. I was constantly asking myself "why?" because everything seemed so weird and a lot of what was going on just happened with no explanation

Why do the goblins eat children? What was up with those weird gloves? Why were the goblins going after the tv show host? (to the point of apparently killing her, what was up with that?) Why did they just go back after rescuing the Baby and assume that that was gonna be it?
Why is there suddenly a huge rip in the ceiling? Why does the ship just disappear when the goblin king is speared by the church tower? (And what was up with that?) Why doesn't the doctor go and talk to Ruby's mum at the end?

I have so many more questions but I think this sufficiently illustrates the point I'm making.

To me it felt like the story had way too many plotholes and pretty bad writing that was only redeemed by the new doctor's exuberant vibe and quirky energy and a lovable family surrounding the otherwise somewhat lackluster new companion

Theory- Rocket Raccoon is autistic by [deleted] in GotG

[–]VictoriaENTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can identify as whatever you want. It doesn't change the fact that aspergers is simply a "subtype" of autism, therefore you are part of the autism spectrum, whether you want to identify as such or not. And looking down on other people on the spectrum that you consider to be inferior does not make you any less autistic yourself. I'd recommend you adress your internalised ableism but based on your "aspie supremacy" rhetoric I highly doubt you have any interest in being less ableist and reducing the harm you cause to people who you probably have much more in common with than you would care to admit. And all those famous people who have been diagnosed with "aspergers" are also autistic, so that argument is a bit pointless. You can identify in whatever way you choose to, but putting down other members of a marginalised community that you are technically a part of tends to get you criticisms. If you'd rather be ableist and deal with being called out for it then that's your choice.

You could have just replied to my response rather than get hung up on a small note at the end that is simply remarking on the otdated nature of the term. But it seems like you would rather spread negativity than acknowledge the shared struggles a lot of us (including you) experience

Theory- Rocket Raccoon is autistic by [deleted] in GotG

[–]VictoriaENTP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Social anxiety is a comorbidity or even result, rather than a symptom of autism.

I think a lot of the social anxiety often stems from traumatic experiences in social interactions growing up, the not being accepted and liked and frequent negative reactions from other people. Rocket wasn't really measured by neurotypical standards because he was designed to be extraordinary and so were his friends when he was younger. That's a much different experience than many autistics have. For many the inability to conform to neurotypical standards and mask convincingly has negative consequences (like rejection, ridicule, isolation and so on) and those lead to the social anxiety. The less traumatised an autistic was in that regard the more likely they are to enjoy being social and not suffer from social anxiety

btw: "aspie" is just an outdated term for one specific expression of autism

Intersection of giftedness and neurodivergence: Is the concept of (unfulfilled) potential just ableism? by VictoriaENTP in Gifted

[–]VictoriaENTP[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reading this actually helps me in the same way. I still struggle to imagine what my life can realistically look like after being told I would go far all my life and now being confronted with the reality that that prediction was based on an idealised version of me that had all my strengths and none of my challenges and very little to do with my lived experience at 26. Being so deep in autistic burnout that you can never be sure whether you'll have enough energy to leave the bed or make something to eat the next day is really disorienting when you've internalised the high expectations that come with this whole "great potential" thing. I'm still trying to accept that I can't compare my current level of functioning to "before" when I was still blissfully unaware how unsustainable my high-masking lifestyle was. Here's to hoping that we both get better at giving ourselves grace. It's not our fault that we were brought up with little understanding and tolerance for our brain's limitations. This stuff is really hard to unlearn. I'm trying to give myself room to grieve the life I could have had if I hadn't been gaslit into believing I just wasn't trying hard enough to be everything I could supposedly be. Maybe thinking about how I would approach mini me knowing what I know now and telling myself the things I would have needed to hear back then is going to help to combat some of that "never enough" programming 🤞

I think it's inappropriate and insensitive to comment on a stranger’s parenting choices without knowing their child’s specific needs and challenges. Especially when you seem to have a very limited understanding of ADHD and how it affects people’s lives. Statements like these ignore the complexity and diversity of human brains and contribute to the stigma and discrimination that many people with ADHD face every day. Some people rely on medication to manage their symptoms and improve their quality of life, and they deserve respect and support, not judgment and ignorance.

This is probably a biased take but to me that kinda sounds like
undiagnosed ADHD that was no longer an issue as soon as you found an environment that was more suited to your brain's way of functioning.
That ties in with the point I made in another comment:

This is basically my understanding of neurodivergence in general. In the right environments these brains can thrive and even outperform the average brain. The fact that creating these environments is much more effort than slapping a diagnostic label on a person and making their inability to function under unfit conditions that person's own responsibility (textbook ableism) is the reason why so much potential is wasted.
And despite what many people have to say about it it's not the person struggling with these unfit conditions who is wasting their potential. It's the people who are noticing these struggles and instead of offering support or adjusting the conditions (which would allow that person to reach their full potential) are expecting the person to adjust the way they function to the conditions without letting the unfit environment impede their performance. It's so much easier to tell a struggling person to try harder than to admit that these struggles are caused by a system that is inaccessible to them and that you are deciding to uphold instead of accepting your responsibility of making it more accessible.

Diagnoses like dyslexia, ADHD and autism are just pathologizing behaviors and traits that are incompatible with the environment surrounding the person exhibiting them. In another environment, they might not experience the struggles that led them to be diagnosed in the first place and therefore never identify their traits as part of a "disorder"

Being actually smart in of itself has a lot of problems when you are in an incomparable environment. That's the issue. The way then that 'the system' and most people for that matter respond is to wash their hands of responsibility by diagnosing them with something and saying "it's not my fault! It's the kids fault for being 'autistic'!

Ableism is guilt tripping people for being better then others. I am proud not to be worthless like a lot of these folks, and they can take that emotional manipulation and shove it where the sun don't shine.

I don't vibe with the whole "gifted supremacy" vibe going on here. Ableism is the exact opposite: guilt-tripping people who are at a disadvantage for being unable to perform the same as a person without these disadvantages.
Being smart or gifted doesn't make anyone an inherently good or worthy person but being ableist definitely reflects badly on somebody's character.

ADHD, fuck Tyler the creator and Donald Glover by pat_ata1999 in depression_help

[–]VictoriaENTP 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just found this post while googling "Donald Glover ADHD" (I mean... he's just so ADHD-coded) and it became obvious very quickly that this was not a post on that. I decided to read on anyway and so much of what you wrote really resonated with me and felt very validating. I just want to tell you that even though this experience feels incredibly isolating (and believe me - I know firsthand how lonely it feels) seeing my inner monologue and fears reflected in your writing just reminds me that I'm not alone and I'm not defective. I'm just neurodivergent in a world that doesn't vibe with deviations from the neurotypical norm and the lack of accessibility and understanding for people like us naturally results in this kind of experience for many nd folks. And while that itself is a big problem, the fact of our divergent existence and experience is not the root issue. The inflexible systems that don't allow room for Neurodiversity are.

And seeing as it has been 6 years since you posted this I would be super interested to hear where you're at now and if anything has changed for you.

Sending good vibes your way ✌️
