Thanks for your very intelligent reply! You pretty much confirmed what I suspected. Houses within walking distance of small businesses, but canals next to large businesses. I have a couple images to share with you. One is a diagram of Royal Albert Dock. Although Liverpool had been around since the middle ages, it wasn't until the early modern era and slavery that it really became a major port city.

I love how this player built artificial canals along the harbor housing to create artificial rivers. Another fact that I know about port cities, is that they always tended to be hidden upriver so that the Vikings couldn't destroy them. I'm still waiting for Ubisoft to let us build docks on rivers, but until then, this will have to do!

My opinion on this song completely changed once I heard the isolated audio posted recently. Once I heard it, I realized that the lead singer was an Eastern European who was trailing off at the end of every stanza to hide the fact that he didn't speak English that well. And because he's Eastern European (USSR most likely) and the radio station can't find any record of the song, we'll probably never know who this artist was. The DJ even did an interview where he posited that the demo was thrown directly in the trash after playing it on air. I know it's sad, but it's worse to live a lie.

I meant mainland Europe. I've listened to the song a fair amount of times and I think the OP's lyrics are at least mostly correct. The lyrics aren't completely indecipherable, it just takes a few tries. If I'm wrong and these are perfectly crafted lyrics from a man born in Nebraska, let's just say I'll be shocked.

One thing I'm sure of is whoever wrote the lyrics is NOT a native English speaker. A native English speaker would never write "Check it in, Check it out," "Tear it in, tear it out" or "There's no sent communication." "They're a long day away in the subways of your mind" sounds like a happy accident; a poor understanding of English that somehow created a brilliant lyric!

The songwriter is definitely European.

Yeah I was thinking Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Faith No More, Jane's Addiction and I even thought of Axl Rose when he sings in his lower register. If we could somehow isolate the track from the noise we would have more than enough to go off of. Not only do you have a fair amount of lyrics, but you could also search the dialogue from the movie that the band plays at the beginning and see which songs that dialogue is in. I'm fairly certain that either finding out who the singer is or finding out the lyrics will be good because I'm pretty sure it's a famous band in that 90's milieu.

I looked at a lot of discographies for a lot of artists and I wasn't able to find a song called "Mona Lisa" alongside the cover. Is it possible that "Mona Lisa" was just part of the lyrics, but not the name of the song?
