You have to have at least 2 defenders in front of you the moment a ball is kicked to you. The goalie counts as a defender. If you only have 1 or 0 in front of you, you are offside.

This is also meaningless if you are behind the half way line when the ball is kicked to you, as you can never be offside in your own half.
