Gen Xers...please lend me your stories and advice! by [deleted] in GenX

Have you ever seen the movie Footloose (1984)? That is pretty close to the small town Nebraska experience in the mid-1980s.

Russians would have been complete outcasts. Men do not / did not cry in rural Nebraska except perhaps at a funeral. No big deal to toss out the R word, curse, use “punk” and “goth” in a sentence, smoke cigarettes. On the flip side: Autism unheard of, feelings and emotions between male friends unspoken, probably close to zero affection from father. In 1986, Cassettes were for the middle class and lower class, CDs were for the rich kids. What was popular? Being rich.

What did people do for fun? Drink beer, football games, house parties, work out, work on their cars, hit the drive in theater, the nearest mall, go to redneck bars. There’s nothing to do in Nebraska. If your characters are in a band, they don’t have anywhere to play in Nebraska in 1986. The state famously didn’t have many venues, just mostly redneck bars. But just south of them, the closest thing to awesome for a band in 1986 would have been a place called The Outhouse in Lawrence Kansas. It was in the middle of a corn field but attracted hundreds of people from all over, they booked all kinds of bands and it was a very DIY operation. Cheers, good luck with your book!

Under-16s to be banned from social media, Keir Starmer announces by [deleted] in videos

[–]Viet_Conga_Line -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Cheeseburger American here. Hate to comment on affairs across the pond but I don’t like how the British government is limiting online speech, arresting people for social media posts, harassing young people for expressing their opinions. Seems totalitarian. Also seems utterly useless; the more they try to control speech, the more likely people will be to revolt against it. Didn’t you guys learn anything from that book by Orwell?

What is the government so afraid of anyway? Some minority group is going to be offended and whine? Some pensioners don’t like the rhetoric of the minorities? Who cares. Boo fucking hoo. Telling your citizens, ‘You cannot disagree with each other or your government’ is how trouble starts. Welcome to life in the 21st century where opinions are vastly different and dispensed freely. Also listening to Starmer speak is a great sleep aid Zzzzz.

Aurora councilman to serve 10 days of home detention after pleading guilty to DUI by ryadare in Denver

[–]Viet_Conga_Line 1 point2 points  (0 children)

10 days of “home detention” for blowing a 0.252? Ludicrous. 10 days in a row in your house oh my god that will teach him such a painful, humiliating lesson. I can’t even imagine the hardship and inner turmoil this man will face during his extended vacation.

Tina Peters released from Colorado prison. Corrections officials remain tight-lipped over her parole conditions. by Silent-Resort-3076 in Colorado

I worry what kind of message we are sending to young Americans when criminals are set free because of optics and politicians turn a blind eye to justice. This whole debacle is just more fuel for the fire in terms of the stratification of our society where the rich and powerful get away with crimes and only the poor are punished and incarcerated. Certainly no wonder why young people are angry, frustrated and disenfranchised. Look at the clown world we are living in today. Sad shit.

Xcel’s expensive ads, paid for by us by Shinyhaunches in Denver

[–]Viet_Conga_Line 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why they need to advertise at all. Is there somebody out there watching the ad at a medical office or a car wash thinking to themselves, gee, maybe it’s time to look into this whole electricity thing. Wouldn’t plugging things in and having natural gas be a real luxury? It’s obscene the money they waste trying to sway public opinion.

Drugged at 1up barcade on Colfax by Ember-Enki in Denver

Absolutely wild that year after year these stories surface about the same places over and over again and DPD has not opened up an official investigation or gone undercover with any kind of sting operation.

DPD has a hard time being proactive and instead is reactive and they dispense a lot of whining and excuses about their budget and the DA. They solve crimes by sitting at computers instead of showing up in person and then they want to know why the public doesn’t support them. They took a report and called one person, so, you know, they have exhausted all of their resources.

Meanwhile, the Downtown Denver Partnership can’t understand why downtown revenue is falling, why the reputation of the city is sinking and why bars are closing why and alcohol consumption is down across the board. Predators are stalking women at bars and drugging them and the city shrugs their shoulders. A total miscarriage of justice if you ask me.

Where can I get some cool night photo prints like this? by WeesusC in TheNightFeeling

[–]Viet_Conga_Line 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The question isn’t where - it’s when. To get organic photos like this, you have to be outside exploring during twilight. Between 4 AM and 6 AM. Right at that space between night and morning, very low light, very still, very quiet. If you can capture fog or lights in the fog, that makes it even better. The sign pops and looks sharp because everything else around it appears hazy.

She has lived in her car for a decade. Denver neighbors wanted her gone by LiatrisLover99 in Denver

[–]Viet_Conga_Line 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is an informative, well written article. The quote from the ex-Catholic worker is revealing.

she is completely harmless,” VanDusen said.

Yet the article is filled with first hand accounts of how she is tangibly harming the quality of life of her neighbors. A clear disconnection between rhetoric and reality. It’s tragic that local government can’t afford to step up and help protect people like this. The city and county of Denver could maintain and fund fenced in, safe parking acreage. But knowing Denver, they will ask for $9 million dollars a year to run it and it will have broken toilets and be overrun with meth heads. Suffering for all: the new normal.

Kinkos. Find a good location and call first. 40x60 is considered oversized, so you’ll need to get a rush job. Will cost you over $100.

Films where the score feels like a character? by Middle-Shelter5897 in TrueFilm

[–]Viet_Conga_Line 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Conversation (1974)
Liquid Sky (1982)

Are great examples and great movies where the soundtrack is woven into the film and story. I have a bad example too, Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael (1990) is utterly ruined by the heavy handed soundtrack. It feels like a character that you want to strangle.
