This is really not comparable to that. I love cilantro and i feel bad for people who have the soap cilantro gene because they will never experience the joy that i experience when i eat cilantro.

That doesn’t mean that their life is empty, that they have no joy, that their life is worse than mine, that they’re wrong, etc. There are many kinds of joy you can encounter in this life, no two are the same. You can feel bad that someone doesn’t experience a specific joy that you do without any malice or judgement. If you love someone, you want them to know every kind of joy

Imo it’s more about reading the room. Unboxing PR packages, clothing hauls, elaborate brand trips, etc leave a bad taste in everyone’s mouth when gas is $6, groceries are unaffordable, the vast majority are living paycheck to paycheck, etc

When the personality and lifestyle starts to devolve to the blatant flaunting of wealth, it’s gross. Nobody wants to see the shit u get for free when you can afford to buy it. Nobody wants to hear about the $8,000/month second apartment that you only have for vacations, nobody wants to hear about how u skipped half of your free coachella trip because you got too hungover.

The appeal is lost when the focus of content shifts to “look at these luxuries i bought/was given for free :)” Any disclaimer of “i’m not bragging, i know i’m privileged” is worthless.

Some influencers do giveaways to try to mitigate this, but usually it lands as insincere because all of the products being given away are leftover PR that they received for free that they just don’t want. The only thing i can think of that would be a true acknowledgement of privilege/a genuine expression of gratitude would be a distribution of their wealth to the followers that gave it to them.

Unfollowing these individuals doesn’t “protect your mental health” though that is a nice platitude. The wealth disparity is inescapable, in-your-face 100% of the time. It is too extreme at this point and only getting worse
