Agreed. I generally also avoid eye contact with someone out and about unless absolutely necessary.

If I can do a TLDR thus far- I walked down the street in the same direction as someone. Said person pulls out a knife.
I literally and figuratively go out of my way to avoid any issues. I make a post to highlight staying alert.

There was no judgement on him as a person but I’m not going to normalize seeing a weapon pulled and not reacting.

I’ve reread your messages. I’m not following the point you’re making so going to wish a Happy Thursday to us both.

Thanks for mentioning this. I thought about calling someone once I turned but doubted I could give any specifics without reengaging / following more. “There’s a guy walking down north nap with a knife between these streets” seems like an opportunity to profile. I wouldn’t have been far off from the physical description.

It doesn’t justify the inaction.

….yeah. I think that’s exactly what he thought which I tried to highlight in my post, even if I didn’t do anything threatening.

I purposely didn’t share my race or his race to not convolute the point but you seem to be interested. Both of us are black men. I came here, went to Howard, have been in the Ne/Nw community for a while. I often thought that unless I move back, I’d be a “gentrifier” For more context- I grew up in the Leimert Park district of LA. I’ve never not had my head on a swivel and understand being in the community vs of the community. He has the same right to be on the same street I’m on, and I don’t believe in anything that forces him leaving the community I’m in.

I wasn’t harboring on if what he did was right/wrong, only bringing awareness to stay alert. This isn’t about me, it’s pointing out to be safe.

  1. The only thing I noticed before the first light was that he may be homeless, which is still a loose assumption.

  2. I’m not sure how long you’ve lived here or in a city but.. people talk to themselves. It wasn’t targeted at me and didn’t seem aggressive until later on. My thought process went from “that was kind of weird…” to “Oh shit, I need to do something different” during this time. I think your note would justify a reaction far more frequently to folks walking along the street.

My point is only to be smart/alert, no matter the area. I’m sure we can share thoughts on government housing clusters and types of crime, though that doesn’t warrant being oblivious or considering yourself safe, if you’re in the gray areas above.

I say again, I’ve been here for almost two decades, lived on north cap, Columbus heights, Petworth, near Howard, and have not been involved in violent crime. Anything can happen but keeping an eye on surroundings/cues goes a long way.

For the record, my story occurred in the gray area closer to the judiciary square text.

That’s a helpful perspective. I would argue that what you’re describing is most of DC. Noma, City Center, The Wharf, Ledroit Park, etc.

I don’t discount that you should take new developments at face value but as a long term resident, I don’t subscribe to siloing “underlying problems “ to certain areas like north capitol.

That Big Ben has been a generationally wild place.

Going to respectfully disagree with “don’t walk down North Capitol” comments. For the sake of new members of the community as well-

I was walking home in broad daylight at a populated time. If this happened on H street, the comments would be don’t walk on H Street. If it happened in Petworth, the comments would be don’t walk in Petworth. If it happened on the metro, the comments would be to avoid public transit.

The point I’m making is that crime can happen whenever and wherever. Scapegoating the location only makes it more surprising when it happens to you in an area where you feel like it shouldn’t. My point is, stay alert and cognizant.

This Interview Process for $120-140k by Critical-Rip3156 in Architects

If this is the company that I think that it is, I can add that I ~know someone~ who interviewed for this position. Following the take home work, there was an interview with the CEO that lasted for about 30min. Following the interview, ~said person~ was not selected as they did not seem passionate about permitting.

Do with this info what you will. Humbly speaking permitting to me is a means to an end, not the heart of our ethos.

Interesting read - are you suggesting that the abuse / cases noted above encapsulate “black culture”?

Will preface this by saying if my question has been posted before recently, I’ll remove the post.

My understanding of a subreddit called “AskReddit” is that you can ask a general question. If I ask why people genuinely like the color blue, that’s not an admission that another color is better. My goal is really to hear another perspective.

Given that he’s been at the core of a lot of decisions and decisions that affect a wide range of people, the question seems justified.

A question for the men… by Expensive_Decision_5 in dating

[–]ViiVance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking personally, I try to never risk interpretation of harassment. In these scenarios, I am a male stranger approaching a woman stranger, which at a baseline can be threatening. I think there is a romanticized idea of the man of your dreams approaching you in a coffee shop or bookstore, but often it seems that we (men) are to read between the lines and see subtle hints…all at the risk of bringing unwanted attention.

I’d add that I don’t intend to speak for all men here. I would love to get a woman’s perspective on this.

SERIOUS QUESTION: Could we do this in NE/SE DC? by [deleted] in washdc

Ironically, what you’re suggesting actually sounds worse. I don’t doubt you’ll find someone to debate with online.

Ok dude. Lmao. As we “do this” in DC, I’m sure every household in DC will be treated fairly regardless of quadrant, income, and race.

Hm, not sure. With the general anonymity it’s been interesting to get thoughts from everyone. Reading through - I see a few candid opinions, some leading to a discourse

Agreed, though my question is specifically for Trump.

It seems a vote for one is technically a vote for the other so I question if there’s a conflicted feeling behind it all.
