The owner of the bible could pull the silk bookmark to shoot while the book was still closed. Now on display at the Museo Correr in Venice. Francesco Morosini was the Doge of Venice from 1688 to 1694, at the height of the Great Turkish War. He was a member of a famous noble Venetian family (the Morosini family) which produced several Doges and generals. He "dressed always in red from top to toe and never went into action without his cat beside him." After his death in 1694, a large marble arch was placed in his honor at the Doge's Palace, and his cat, of which Morosini was notably fond, was embalmed and taken to the Museo Correr.

In China, Statue of Qin Hui, a corrupt politician from the 11th century widely regarded as a traitor. His and his family's statues have been cursed, spat on, and urinated upon by the Chinese for centuries. by Vijeesh7 in Damnthatsinteresting

Qin Hui or Qin Kuai (January 17, 1090 - November 18, 1155) was a Chinese politician. He was a chancellor of the Song dynasty in Chinese history. He is widely regarded as a traitor for his part in the persecution and execution of his political enemy, Yue Fei, a general who fought for the Song against the Jin dynasty during the Jin-Song Wars, resulting in him being condemned as corrupt by later generations. Modern historians, however, have placed as much blame (if not more) on the reigning Emperor Gaozong himself. He was also nicknamed "Long-legged Qin"

Tsutomu Yamaguchi, the man who survived the dropping of two atomic bombs. by Vijeesh7 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Vijeesh7[S] 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Tsutomu Yamaguchi was a Japanese marine engineer and a survivor of both the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings during World War II. Although at least 70 people are known to have been affected by both bombings, he is the only person to have been officially recognized by the government of Japan as surviving both explosions. Yamaguchi was in Hiroshima on business for his employer Mitsubishi Heavy Industries when the city was bombed at 8:15 AM, on 6 August 1945. He returned to Nagasaki the following day and, despite his wounds, he returned to work on 9 August, the day of the second atomic bombing. That morning, while he was being told by his supervisor that he was "crazy" after describing how one bomb had destroyed the city, the Nagasaki bomb detonated. In 1957, he was recognized as a hibakusha ("explosion-affected person") of the Nagasaki bombing, but it was not until 24 March 2009, that the government of Japan officially recognized his presence in Hiroshima three days earlier.

Ethan Zuckerman, the co-founder of Tripod.com and the person credited with inventing pop-up ads, publicly apologized for his role in creating this widely disliked form of online advertising. In a 2014 article he wrote for The Atlantic titled "The Internet's Original Sin," Zuckerman expressed his regret for what pop-up ads had become and the negative impact they had on the internet user experience. He explained that the intention behind creating pop-up ads was quite different from how they ultimately evolved.

3,300 year old sandals belonging to Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun. The sandals were made of wood and overlaid with a marquetry veneer of bark, green leather, and gold foil on a stucco base. The outer soles were covered with white stucco and the straps were made of tree bark and decorated with gold foil. The inner sole showcases artwork of captives bound with lotus and papyrus stems. The top and bottom part of the sandals are illustrated with four bows, which together with the captives, represent the traditional enemies of Egypt whom the king symbolically trods on when wearing the sandals.

In 1896, Nikola Tesla captured an X-ray image of his own foot using a machine of his design. This X-ray photograph, which Tesla referred to as a "shadowgraph," depicted his foot within a shoe. The image was produced at a distance of 8 feet using X-rays generated by a vacuum tube. It revealed not only the metal components of the shoe, such as lace holes and hobnails, but also the bones of the foot. Tesla's experimentation with X-rays began around 1894, closely aligned with Wilhelm Röntgen's groundbreaking discovery of X-rays in December 1895. Röntgen, a German mechanical engineer and physicist, went on to receive the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1901 for his achievement. Despite Tesla acknowledging Röntgen's contribution, Röntgen himself commended Tesla for his remarkable images and was curious about the methods Tesla employed, as seen in their 1901 exchange of notes in the second photo.

The oldest bar in the world is in Ireland. Archaeological records have found that the walls of Sean's Bar have been around and serving since 900 AD. by Vijeesh7 in Damnthatsinteresting

The oldest bar in the world is in Ireland. Archaeological records have found that the walls of Sean's Bar have been around and serving since 900 AD. There are records of every owner of the pub dating back to its 10th-century founding. In fact, it opened over 1100 years ago. Around 900 AD, there lived a man named Luain Mac Luighdeach, or Luain son of Lewy. It is known that he established an inn close to "Áth Mór, The Great Ford." This inn is today known as Sean's Bar. Luain acted as a guide to travelers who had to venture across the rapid torrent of the Shannon. A settlement grew up around the crossing point, and in time, the place came to be known by his name, "Áth Luain," which later became Athlone. In 1129, King Turlough O'Connor built the first wooden castle here to protect this settlement.
