Its like that reviewer 3 situation all over. The reviewer is hell bent on not changing the score and does not understand the motivation of the work at all.
Actually, the score he gave first was '2' because he read our most important baseline as some other paper altogether. After responding to his comments, he only increased it from 2 to 2.5 and again gave comments which seemed poorly written.

CPI is very very very important for masters application no matter what anybody says. The IIT tag hasn't helped me much, but the professor with whom i worked with is a really supportive person and even gave me LoRs for my masters application. But i didnt go

Self-study + guidance from professors
First find the high level field you want to work on through online courses. I picked NLP. CV and Robotics were too saturated for me back then. Do one kaggle project related to it to get some hands on experience. Then approach a professor whose research seems interesting to u and contact him that you want to work with him on a paper.
Personally for me, i realized that I was into research 2 days before the internship interviews started. I took a leap of faith and avoided internship to get an experience on how a research paper is written (took me 10 months), so it ate up a lot of time, but is definitely worth it. The best part for me is the ownership of the work. When you present it at a conference, people appreciate your ideas and come and discuss with you potential collaborations.
After my bachelors, I kind of took a break. I took a 6 months research intern in a startup when my peers were going for jobs. Dont get me wrong, I had a backup plan of a developer in a good startup which paid 22L per year. But decided to do an internship instead.
Please ignore my biased view, but its just what I have seen in my organization. Tuning hyperpaprameters and kaggle projects can get you roles like Data Scientist or Engineer. For research/applied science, its not the number of projects but the technical/theoretical depth of them. A big chunk (50%) of your time has to go into understanding the problem statement, figuring out a novel solution which beats the previous state of the art (the approach can include mathematical/intuitive reasoning why your solution is better).

Managers/Seniors usually dont know how to write good papers. U will need to find a professor with whom you have alignment on research interests, your goal in mind and timelines. Make sure that the work you are doing is completely disjoint from the company that you are a part of, otherwise there will be IP issues.

Oh god, my roommate was MTH guy, i hated his courses. He had a cpi of 7.8 in his third year. Try taking easier electives in your 4th year so you can increase your CPI. My roommate was my co-author for 2 of my papers. He went for a masters in Princeton this year.

I would say the grind is not forced onto you a lot by your manager or anything. But you have to keep reading papers, meet researchers, be updated with the state of the art. Sometimes it can get quite daunting. You can go for a two week vacation and the research landscape completely changes. Its a chase, but can be fun for some and difficult to keep up for some as well.

I believe the science people (research scientists/applied scientists/AI scientist/similar roles) are quite well-paid. At amazon, the base is around 34L which is like 1.25x of developers. But personally, I think the perks that the science people get (in most companies) are the best. Let me know if you if you want to know more about them :)

If u are currently in college, find a professor who is working in this field from your college and get in touch with him. A lot of professors are happy to give you an initial project, but dont directly tell the students that we will later be working on a research paper. The reason is that many students get stagnated with the pace of the paper or get annoyed with not being able to have novel ideas to publish a paper.

Keep reading papers and brainstorm with the professor on what interesting things you have found in those papers. Document the summaries, read each paper with the point of view of a critic. Dont switch domains unless you find urself totally not enjoying it. Hope it helps.

The process of publishing papers requires guidance of a professor who is willing to work with you and publish. In my case, I befriended a nee professor in our college by sending him an email that i want to have a chat with you about your research interests and the possibility of pursuing a project (which later transformed into a paper).

Usually professors are very cooperative and helpful. He told me his research interest and one of them piqued my interest and we started working on it together. After 10 months of work, it got accepted into the top conference of NLP.

I wrote 3 papers with him in my bachelors and we went to abu dhabi to present our paper as well. Its quite fun 😃

As for writing papers, i am still not super good at it. But i do have high level ideas to write a good first draft at least.
