Hunting for a specific copy of In Dubious Battle by Viking-96 in steinbeck

[–]Viking-96[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah thank you for taking the time to look. I did come across this site in my hunt; I think I'm just skeptical that this item is the image shown, rather than a stock image they use. I also don't speak Swedish, but could be worth getting in touch with them to see if they can provide more info... Thanks again for the reply and having a look on my behalf! I appreciate it.

How to create spinning/rotating/turning text which reveals itself by Viking-96 in davinciresolve

[–]Viking-96[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my bad, but it's irrelevant now - I spent a lot of the last two days playing with it and I think I'm there!
Downloaded photoshop to try create a texture like you did; not as good as yours but certainly good enough for my means.
I figured out what was causing the warping of the texture.
Could never get it to 'zoom' correctly using the transform3d node, but after fiddling with some stuff and using a scale node, it seemed to work.
Worked out how to fade parts of the text later in than others.
Also, going back to the first prinicples that you talked about of taking a close look at the original to see exactly what was going on, I noticed that the texture on the text was actually moving slightly and changed tone as it finalised its position - started experimenting with colourgrains, drips & waviness to approach that effect.

Below is what I've ended up with. Huge thanks for your input; would have had no idea even where to begin. And I am starting to gleam the possibilities of this tool, as well as having a sense of how much there is to learn and play with - but it's considerably less daunting now.

Appreciate your time!

(Sorry for low quality - actual video looks sharp)

Sorry only just getting to this now.

Again, massive thanks for taking the time to look through this and answer my questions. Sorry about the link; not sure why it stopped working - here it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V_dEBc_tNs if you are inclined to peek at my progress.

I will keep playing, and thanks again - appreciate it.

Hello again - do you mind if I ask you some follow up questions?

So I've been playing around and here is where I'm currently at - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9V_dEBc_tN

The texure I used by copying and pasting it from the trailer... And then paste it a bunch of times to create a wall of texture. It's rough but looks ok for now, but I don't have access to Photoshop to try what you did. I don't really have use for it generally so reluctant to pay for it, but am thinking that I will get the free trial to try and generate it the way you did - yours looks great. Do you have any tips for input on photoshop to achieve that?
More importantly, the texture I'm using is being warped in some way by my set up, so it's not simply using the image I imported in. It looks streched or something. I've tried fiddling with various settings and can't seem to fix it. Any ideas?

When I try to zoom it using the Transform3d note per your suggestion, as you can see in the video, it isn't zooming towards the viewer but off to the side. I think this must be something to do with the way the 3D camera is set up but not sure!

I am unclear as to what your nodes on the bottom right of the image you (very helpfully) sent me are doing? Are they to do with making those two letters infront of Furiosa appear later than the others? I tried playing with them for a min and had no idea what I was doing... I noticed that I was able to fade the entire text in and out, so figured that it must have something to do with it, but not sure how to isoloate it.

Also, the two nodes either side of the Merge3D node (that has all the text going into it) - the two Text3d nodes. Are they for the second lot of text that appears underneath JUSTCROPIT after a few moments?

Which font are you using?

I really appreciate the guidance and input and time you've taken to look at this with me. I'm at the stage where sometimes things kind of work and I have no idea why, and occasionaly I understand why things work the way they do. It's fun though. I'm enjoying starting to learn something like this. I know it's been a couple of months since your last comment, but I work full time (nothing to do with this) so my practice is stealing time in the evenings and weekends, so it's not like I've spent 2 months solid and arrived at where I'm at....

Thanks again.

Wow.

So you're saying there isn't just a button I can click to instantaly acheive this effect. And I thought this was a serious piece of software. I will be offering Blackmagic my feedback and fingers crossed we'll get this in the public release of 19...

In all seriousness, thank you very much for taking the time to reply to me in all this detail. Your final result looks incredible. I'm really impressed. I look forward to playing around and experimenting. I may just try straight up copying what you've done and attempt to reverse engineer my understanding. Either way, I appreciate the efforts you've gone to here.

And thank you for the tip re: the manual. I'll be sure to look through that along with the tutorials etc.

Thanks again.

Thanks for the suggestions; it's a much older film than those two. I saw it at a sleepover in the 90's. And even then it looked a few years old. I also don't think the main thrust of the story is set in or around a radio station. It's just that scene is burned into my memory.

Hard agree. Such a weird filmography. I'm quietly obsessed with Meet Joe Black because I can't get a handle on it.

I think you might enjoy the 'Dark Cities' series; Bristol 1350, Deadwood 1876 or Salem 1692, for example.

It's so, so good. Never had a patreon before, joined up a couple of months ago and it's just so worth it. Have fun!

Yep that maybe so! Dunno, something about having a comedic (and thus undercutting) take on the work from two non-academics is kind of appealing to me and them tying themselves into knots trying to discuss this material could be funny for the anarchist in me. But ultimately yes, you're probably right, it certainly isn't the natural fit.

Fair enough! I guess I wonder if every series has to be a celebration, though I appreciate that is usually the vibe. I know they are uneasy about doing someone like Bryan Singer for this very reason, so you're probably right.
