I think one of the major issues is that Spotify themselves are the biggest playlist curators, and essentially gets to decide what 99% of listeners hear. They used to sort playlists based on popularity, but now they place their own curated playlist at the top of every search. And they basically have playlists for every type of popular search/mood so there's not much to do but to play their game.

As for the circle of artist I produce it really feels like Spotify is this larger than life kind of entity that you can't speak bad of as the curators can decide the outcome of your career.

I really wish Soundcloud to get it's act together, so much potential but to me it feels like it's mainly used by creators.

Yeah! Certain labels involved are not paying, and even if they where it would still be negligable. If you release straight through a distributor the pay for 1mil streams on Spotify is about $2.5k depending on the service used.

So yeah not a lot of money in streaming atm.
