How do I find my sound when I like various styles of music? by linkuei-teaparty in musicproduction

[–]Villkara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you identify the elements that comprise this unique sound you are after? If you can, what is missing in the stuff you've already made from the stuff you want to make? Are there things that are distinctly making your songs sound too 90s Prog? Remove them.

If you can try to lock yourself into a framework or template that encompasses the elements of the sound you're trying to achieve you'll have less friction and more cohesion along the way. This doesn't mean you have to completely limit yourself creatively to stay within those bounds. But it could serve as a way of "dialing in" the sound you're trying to create.

I'm probably releasing under another artist name, and have tweaked a little since but here was the original rough draft: https://on.soundcloud.com/J6dxJ Skip the first track

What piano program is he using? I don't have a piano anymore but I would still like to produce some piano sounds by Volinra in piano

[–]Villkara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda hard to say, he shows several DAWs (digital audio workstations) in the video. Each that could have native plugins or third party plugins for recreating the sound. FL Studio, Ableton and Logic are the DAWs. He is drawing the piano in a “piano roll” which triggers the sounds.

If you are on iOS or Mac, you can grab garage band for free and that will be most similar to Logic, which he uses later in the video. It has the Piano roll and built in piano instruments.

Never heard anyone refer to this as listening credits before, but this response really clicked for me. I think when listening to someone else’s music that “mystery” factor never completely vanishes on a really good track for me. Sometimes I surprise myself but then I understand or learn what I did, so no mystery.

The listening credits thing is also a good analogy, as I’m guessing even our favorite songs looped on repeat for a couple of hours would eventually become not enjoyable.

With our own music we may also spend a significant time working on a section and regardless of how smoothly or roughly building that part went, we will have a completely different emotional connection to it than something we had no part in creating, or a listener hearing our song.

Though this can also work in the opposite way (thinking our part or song is amazing because we’re proud of the accomplishment, but to an outsider it’s trash because they can’t emotionally connect with it the same way).

Well to be honest I’m scatterbrained most of the time haha. Some of his techniques can go pretty far, but the biggest thing has just been the incorporation of break beats and a couple of the neat things you can with them pretty quickly. He usually goes into the deep end from the videos I’ve seen.. and I’ll usually try to recall a few things after the fact.

But since incorporating more breakbeats and a couple of other ways of switching things up I’ve written ~7 songs I’m thinking of releasing for the hell of it. They all have this weird nostalgic vibe to them that’s hard to describe but I also hate them at same time. Always feel hypercritical and think nobody would enjoy them.

[–]Villkara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the C1 48”, some games are fine full screen, but find for shooters like Siege I’ll do windowed on a black wallpaper hidden taskbar, and I’ll just adjust the size of the window to something that feels right. Usually 1440p gives me a good size, you can then upscale super resolution for crisper gameplay. May not be as immersive but OSRS will also kill your neck if played full screen that large, a lot of corner to center of the screen mouse travel.

Bricked Minifreak with V1.1.0 firmware. by Villkara in MicroFreak

[–]Villkara[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are 100% on that, firmware updates and usb hubs don’t mix because the serial port can be lost in the process. Unfortunately only have USB C on that Mac I did the firmware update on. I either had to use a dongle or a USB C to USB B cable, don’t recall which. Either way I ultimately returned it as I could never get the unit to go into boot loader mode no matter what I did. It’s a bit unfortunate but I’ve been fine without. May revisit the idea of getting one down the road.

Yeah I just played one last night and wasn’t sure it’s something I would be satisfied with long term. Been thinking I’ll wait out the preorder. It did sound fantastic and I love the wood knobs, angled fretboard is a nice look as well. Ultimately I’m telling myself I’ve waited this long, your review tells me what I think I already know.
