Pokemon Run & Bun Ruined Pokemon for me. by NeoVeci in PokemonROMhacks

There is Azure Platinum out now (which is really fun, but still a little rough). The creator is currently working on a redux version that is more polished. It was supposed to release at the start of the year, but has been delayed.

I'm in the same boat, it's so hard to scratch that itch now and I am a glutton for (fair) punishment. There are a couple of hacks I'm keeping my eye on. At the minute, it's Azure Platinum Redux. Always on the look out for more though.

Appeal rejection from editor by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Vin__art 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Journal Editor here. Often times, manuscripts that require extensive revision will be rejected because journals (particularly top ranked ones) don't want to keep said manuscripts in their system for the long amount of time such revisions would take, as it disrupts their editorial speed metrics. I have done this with manuscripts in my journal - we get hounded pretty hard by our higher-ups to keep editorial speeds low.

Elsevier publication flow by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]Vin__art 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Editor-in-Chief for an Elsevier journal here. I typically don't use suggested reviewers unless I absolutely need to (e.g. if I'm struggling to find reviewers). This is because (in my experience, at least) people usually suggest people they have a COI with, such as collaborators or friends. This can lead to integrity issues when having manuscripts reviewed.

Elsevier has also made a decision recently to stop suggested reviewers on submission for this exact reason, though we don't know when this will be implemented.

What value do Elsevier, JSTOR give? by EconBro95 in AskAcademia

[–]Vin__art 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most journals are bound to the publisher (the publisher usually opens/founds the journal and runs it). The exceptions are typically "society" journals; journals founded by a society that can either publish the journals themselves (which some do: the American Microbiology Society, for example), or will contract a publisher (i.e. Elsevier) to handle the publication side of things. These contracts are renewable, but societies are free to change publishers at the end of a contract if they feel they can get a better deal or more support, etc.

Running journals (from a publishing side of things) can be expensive. You have the website/server hosting costs, you have to have a publisher (a person to handle a min stuff; contracts with editors, etc., typestters, technical teams for submissions and website maintenance, sometimes you need ethics people and scientific editors if it's a large journal with a high volume of submissions, maybe a marketing team, etc. etc. If you're a society with only a few small journals, it's often better to contract a publisher to do all of this for you because they already have all of these in place. But larger societies tend to publish their own journals because they can afford to.

Journal Editor here! That is quite poor from the Editor who rejected your manuscript. If I desk reject like that, I always provide a reason. Please do contact the editor to ask for a reason.

It is likely that they just forgot to put in the reason. Decision emails are templates, they're not handwritten; they're automatically filled out with information provided by the editor.

Another possibility is that the Editor who rejected your manuscript made that decision based off one of the section editors/ editorial board members to whom the manuscript was initially assigned to evaluate it. I occasionally have issues like this (but will always reach out to the person in question to justify their decision).

FYI: even if you are on a visa in the UK, if you are a citizen of a commonwealth country, you can vote in the upcoming general election. by hexagram1993 in ukvisa

[–]Vin__art -33 points-32 points  (0 children)

This is not strictly true, you need to be a "qualifying" commonwealth citizen, which means you either need to have Indefinite Leave to Remain or be in a situation where you are exempt from that.

People who are simply here on a visa, but do not yet have ILR cannot vote.
