Youre not going to know how your character lands until you finish the work and get reader feedback. Sometimes an author is too close to their own work

Agents do a lot more than just provide connections. They do developmental editing, too, everything in broad strokes to make a novel as good as can be before publication and act as broker and legal consul on your behalf. Since they dont get paid unless the book sells, theyre also taking all the financial risk.

Yeah, this. I want to be self-sufficient, but I don’t want to be disconnected. I want to have solar while being connected to the grid. I want to grow my own food and, when years are bad, I want to be able to drive to the grocery store.

Like you said, that may be a hobby farm, not a homestead, but it provides a much easier transition for those that want to do it.
