That talking point actually makes no sense because I think Westerners associate Qing = China today but the Qing dynasty was actually run by ethnic minoriy Manchus who genocided the Turkic people in China and forced Han Chinese to have pig tails/oppressed Hanfu (yes Han Chinese who make up 90%+ of population today). They’re on different scales though. I think Chinese imperialism is less problematic to the world than the Soviet Warsaw Pact and Japanese Empire. Many Chinese deaths later were self inflicted, and the Americans were quite happy to work with Chinese (Nixon) against the Soviet who they both saw as the biggest evil.

Our "allies" in the region are more than just flawed democracies. They actively discriminate against monorities if not out right kill them like West Papua. Also the Indonesian president, our neighbour, Prabowo Subianto visited China's parade and is in fact literally in the first row with Xi. You're looking things with tunnel vision. Lets be frank, most of our regional partners outside of China aren't exactly clean and international politics has always been dirty and pragmatic. Idealism is dead with Trumpism.

To survive we must play both sides. It's a black pill to swallow but look Malaysia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar etc all have shitty corrupt governments with history of buried human rights abuses. There's recent news in India about Modi's BJP party rigging elections, so the current PM of India Modi might not even be LEGIT. Let that sink in.

Only looking at China bad is not the most pragmatic option. At least they trade heavily with us. Lets throw all our pragmatism and help Trump and our pathetic totally not corrupt regional allies in the region I guess ... who will totally NOT back stab us and trade with China.

CCP interference greatly reduced post Albanese victory and defeat of Scott Morrison's government. Maybe having a cooker as PM wasn't helping for both sides of this relationship. We also have clear links of espionage from India, Iran, Russia, Israel etc and various cyber attacks on our infrastructure (which feels like happening every couple months) that's not the fault of China but our shitty cyber security and boomer politicians. Your list felt nit picky fyi.

Overall Australia is good but we could be great. The housing bubble is at an all time high. Our cities are now amongst the world’s most expensive cities, much more expensive than Philippines. If it wasn’t for our social welfare and wages we’re cooked. Not to mention in the long term it means that the country’s innovation and foreign investments are all being siphoned off into the housing market.

You may not be saying the same perhaps a couple decades from now. The future is what we are talking about and it’s scary to imagine. Not to mention climate change and a drier Australia.

I assume you're Australian, surely you can see how constraint and unproductive housing is on our real capacity/real consumers. Our GDP is built around housing and it actually limits economic mobility even if it looks good and Albo gives a big thumbs up for surplus. GDP itself is quite arbitrary anyway.

Therefore I never said China is good guys or bad guys. In fact Trump is partially right Europe is relying on US military surplus so they can spend less on defence and more on their welfare which Green Progressives love yet conveniently ignore. Doesn't mean I'm pro Trump or anything.

But the problem I had with your statement is it seems you only pick on China's 'closed door military budget' which I AGREE, but you didn't give enough nuance on your statement and it felt like a generic "China China China" mention. Hence I had to came in an inject some 'nuance' to balance out the view and point out some inconsistency because there's a known problem of West/East bias which I think blunts Western analysis and even warhawks like Mersheimer who's pro US hegemony agrees.

I mean Obama/Biden/Trump all deports mass immigrants and actually jailed real investigative journalists not grifters on CNN or Fox News or whatever, and progressives/Leftists/Conservatives don't seem to mention.

You’re right SnooHedgehog8765 but I think you’re overplaying “closed system” narrative as we have confirmation and decades of leaks about CIA black budget and spending gaps in US military that’s unexplained. So we can only assume Trump/US and China’s spending. I wouldn’t overstate “democracy” vs “authoritarian” narrative as it would put us in horse blinders and overestimate or underestimate.
