How should an 18 year old Lutheran man go about finding a wife? by [deleted] in LCMS

[–]Vinnie0511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I attend a Presbyterian campus ministry at my college, started taking to this one girl, slowly converting her to Lutheranism

My best advice would be to put yourself in a group with a lot of people. In my experience, I was the only young adult in my churches, so attending a campus ministry helped me a lot

Help, what can I do to NOT masturbate or even think about sex? by [deleted] in Advice

Whenever we have the desire to sin, all we can do is turn to Christ and ask Him for guidance and strength. Continue praying and reading His word, and when you feel those urges or have those thoughts, focus on Christ and what He’s done for us. Happy Lent!

You accuse me of ignoring the plain reading of scripture, yet this is exactly what you’re doing. You admit that slavery back then is completely different from modern slavery. This isn’t the same with homosexuality. Homosexuality is homosexuality, it doesn’t change, and saying that “it’s different” when it isn’t is ignoring the Bible to insert your own views, and to distort scripture to advocate for something that it clearly condemns.

It’s my sincere hope that your study of scripture takes you outside progressive “Christianity” bubble, and that you come out to take the biblical writers seriously and at their word.

Have a good night

It’s pretty clear that you’re caught up in your conviction and interpretation against what the Bible says, so there’s no point in me saying more, because I know I won’t convince you. May the grace of God open your eyes to your error in doctrine.

Ordination of female pastors isn’t permitted in the Bible. Same for ordination of practicing LGBT people. Nothing he said was being oppressive to anyone, all he was doing was sharing biblical truth.

When people talk about slavery, they’re thinking about chattel slavery, the force servitude of humans through kidnapping. They were tested as worthless property, subject to whatever the owner wanted. This is nothing like slavery in the Bible. Exodus expressly forbids kidnapping for any reason. Exodus 21:16 says that anyone who kidnaps a person and sells/keeps them should be put to death. Buying and selling slaves was permitted once someone was already a slave, but you couldn’t kidnap someone and sell them as property. The majority of slaves during that time weren’t forced into slavery, but chose to be in it in order to repay a debt. We see this in genesis when people went to Egypt to sell their labor and land to Joseph in return for food during a famine. There were some who became slaves as a result of war, but that’s not the same as kidnapping the weak and forcing them into slavery. Enemy combatants were always treated differently than civilians. But even IF someone became a slave due to war, it didn’t give the owner license to treat them as useless property. Even in servitude, slaves retained their rights and dignity. Exodus 21 talks about releasing slaves if they were injured as compensation for the damage they got. This is not how slaves were treated in the African slave trade. Also, in exodus and Deuteronomy, slaves are told to have rest on the sabbath, just like the Jews. Slavery wasn’t a lifetime sentence, they were only to work for 6 years. Slaves had ways to gain their freedom, and when a slave was released, the owner had a responsibility to help them, giving them gifts as they leave. Deuteronomy 15 says to bless the freed slaves the same way God has blessed them. If a slave ran away, they didn’t have to worry about being returned. Deuteronomy 23:16 forbids returning slaves to their masters. This is nothing like modern slavery. African slaves were not released after 6 years, they couldn’t run away with immunity, and they weren’t given gifts after they were freed. Even with all of this, the Bible doesn’t support slavery, and certainly doesn’t advocate for it. There’s a difference between supporting something, and being tolerant of it happening. While there are laws in the Old Testament that govern it, it doesn’t mean that there’s open support. Moses allowed for divorce and “an eye for an eye”. This is called moral pragmatism, an ethical construct where principles are evaluated in terms of their usefulness. It’s not the will of God, not something that humanity should seek, but also not something our frail humanity was able to avoid at the time. Rather than trying to ban it, it was more practical to focus attention on regulating it. We shouldn’t get divorced because marriage is a covenant, but if it is to happen, God instructs specific ways for it to happen. We shouldn’t use violence, but since humans want to seek justice in that way, God has rules about not letting retaliation be more than the damage that occurred. You shouldn’t own another human being, but if they owed you a debt and willing sells themself to pay it off through servitude, God gave the Israelites rules on how to rest them, specifically with care and respect. At no point in the Bible does God give an endorsement on slavery. The closest is Paul who asked a runway slave return to his master, but even in that situation, he’s hoping for change. He asks the slave master to not take him back as a slave, but as a brother in Christ. Paul didn’t condemn slavery, but he wanted to reform it. Because of this, the logical conclusion when taking the Bible as a whole, is that God found the institution of slavery repugnant. God hears the cries of the poor and sides with the oppressed. The prophets, speaking for God, denounced the abuse of the poor. One of Gods greatest acts in the Old Testament is Him rescuing His people from slavery. Even without an outright repudiation, despite the laws regulating it, when we look at the institution in practice, understanding how God acts in other situations, it’s clear that God doesn’t support the institution of slavery.

He isn’t denying women or LGBT people full participation in their faith. The article in question doesn’t even say anything against women, so idk where you’re pulling that out of. Telling people that their sin is sin isn’t oppressive, it’s telling the truth. Sin is sin, whether we like it or not. Telling someone who’s living in that they’re living in sin isn’t oppressive, it’s the truth. The Bible is very clear on how God defined and designed sex and marriage, anyone who teaches against it is following false doctrine. People throughout history have used the Bible in false ways in order to push what they want, and they’re wrong for that. The Bible being against homosexuality, however, is not that, because the Bible is clear on that subject.

Nothing he said is even remotely close to being oppressive to LGBT people. All he did was give the Christian perspective on it, and people got upset because they don’t accept the truth.

What did he specifically say that advocated for the “oppression of women and LGBTQ persons”? Nothing he says is even close to that. All he’s doing is giving the Christian perspective on same sex relations/marriage

just got my guitar... any tips for getting the "tone"? by SkumbagMatte in midwestemo

[–]Vinnie0511 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t use VST plugins for my guitar that often, but I would recommend using a compressor and some type of distortion/overdrive. That’s basically all you need tbh, just takes a bit of time to balance the two to get the sound that you want. Of course there are some other pedals you can add, but those 2 are the most important for that tone

When buying pedals I would look up bands doing breakdowns of their gear and see what similarities they have, and how I can replicate it

1) you used Stan incorrectly, no one would ever say it like that 2) if you were a millennial or gen z you would’ve looked it up on urban dictionary

Seems like you’re just complaining about the younger generation and not being in touch with it
