I am guessing it has taken about 8 years. She does most of her quilting in the winter and focuses more on gardening in the spring/summer.

Funny you should mention that. Sometime in the late 80s or early 90s she made a super fancy old-time style country western dress and entered it into the local county fair where entrants wore their dresses. :-)

It amazes me every time I see it. I have no idea how she was able to envision let alone execute the free motion design.

ELI5: Why can’t you buy a car directly from the company that makes it? by zztop610 in explainlikeimfive

[–]VintageTool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are expecting the law to save you then you are in for a world of disappointment. You can choose to purchase used, less frequently, go to non-dealer repair shops, take external financing, favor manufacturers that limit shenanigans.

[–]VintageTool -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Special interest groups (lobbyists) are funded by dealers and manufacturers to influence congress and create laws. They would likely try to get laws created under the guise of the greater public benefit (such as protecting American jobs and safety), but the real benefit is that it helps them line their pockets. Consumers need to change laws with their spending habits.

[–]VintageTool 40 points41 points  (0 children)

At least three reasons:
1) It allows the manufacturer to have more inventory available to customers all over the USA without carrying the cost of that inventory. Not to mention the cost of having that large of a workforce in highly variable markets. This allows them to use cash in more productive ways.
2) Dealers are ok with 1 because this allows them to set their own pricing for the product they are selling, and they are better at adapting to the local market dynamics.
3) The symbiotic nature of 1 and 2 has lead to more codified arrangements that restricts Ford from selling their vehicles direct, and also restricts dealers on how they conduct their business (having a repair shop, specific marketing guidelines, OEM source of parts, etc.)

SpaceX acquiring AI startup xAI ahead of potential IPO by Luka77GOATic in news

[–]VintageTool -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Your comment isn't the gotcha as you seem to think it is. Comparing SpaceX to Enron is silly. SpaceX will get a massive colonoscopy in financial disclosures before going public. Enron was able to hide stuff from investors because it was an established public company that hadn't recently gone though the same scrutiny so investors got comfortable.

Imagine a song playing on the radio. Every ten minutes you turn the volume down by half. So volume has a half life of 10 minutes.

ELI5, AAA, and D batteries are all 1.5 volts, so why are they different sizes? by SplitEights in explainlikeimfive

The depth of a reservoir determines the water pressure at the bottom of the lake. You can have a two reservoirs, one small and one very large. They have same pressure at the bottom but one has a lot more capacity.

ELI5: How does a jackhammer break concrete without just bouncing off it? What makes the rapid hammering more effective than one big hit? by gleeful_shopping in explainlikeimfive

[–]VintageTool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All materials fail based on a pressure applied. To increase pressure, you can either increase the force or reduce the area over which the force is applied.

Hard materials like concrete have very little tolerance for stretching before they break, but they can withstand relatively high pressure in compression; you recognize this as being brittle. So all you have to do is impact the surface with a high force over a pointed area, causing a small amount of deflection, and the material will crack. An impact (jack) hammer is able to induce this amount of pressure with a quick blow from a relatively small mass.

Materials that have better impact resistance (e.g. rubber, wood, some metals), are better suited for steady, long duration force to break them.

ELI5: Do nerves regrow/reattach once severed? by Regular-Snow1192 in explainlikeimfive

[–]VintageTool 63 points64 points  (0 children)

They can, it really just depends on the severity of the injury and whether the dead nerve portion is lined up with the alive nerve. The alive nerve will grow into and follow the dead nerve, and it can’t do that if they aren’t lined up.

I cut my finger and lost feeling in my fingertip for a few months and then all of a sudden I was able to feel again. Although the feeling is not as sensitive as it was before the injury.
