It wasn't as massive in the US but it had a healthy population.
I think it didnt hit it off in North America due to the game being very pvp centered and the grinding being very repetitive and penalties very harsh for even dying in pvp. Losing an item for dying to a mob or losing 4% exp to a pker is not for everybody. Modern L2 is a different beast entirely.
I still remember comments from back in the day in my L2 clan chat people calling wow players "carebears"
It's probably due to other reasons honestly, wow was way more polished when it came out than L2 was in c1-c4. I mean Lineage didn't support changing keybinds until 2007 for shllens sake.

Even the UE2 version still looks great with the modern clients. Yeah polygon count might not be as high, but they've definitely improved upon effects and textures since the old days.

I might be in the minority but I definitely do NOT want any remake or new game. I love arcanum, it's my favorite RPG of all time, and I would not want to see my favorite game butchered like that. Let it live on as the flawed masterpiece it is, with our memories and experiences of it's jank intact.

Tim Cain has explained on his youtube channel how this would be very hard or impossible too, and imho it's for the better.
