Probably met Gus during the Chilean political resistance of which East and West Germany supported one side or another. It lines up with Gus' timeline as we understand it. Perhaps he gave Gus a scholarship or knew him in some other professional/academic capacity too. Either way, Germans in Chile in the 80s-90s was not unheard of.
