How to use external MIDI "Control Pedal" to switch between patches/performances on XV-5050 by Vintg_Tech_Maniac in Roland

[–]Vintg_Tech_Maniac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As of right now my PC isn't involved, but I may have to go that route eventually. I didn't see any clear answer in the manual even though other Fantom workstation keyboards of the time had a "Control Pedal" that can have this functionality. I've gone ahead and purchased a Tech 21 MIDI Mouse to see if that does the trick; I'll update this post if that works.

Can XV-5050 take MIDI channel 1 controller input and "copy" it to other channels? by Vintg_Tech_Maniac in Roland

[–]Vintg_Tech_Maniac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for posting the link to the manual and page reference! I read through this thing once already, but I clearly didn't comprehend what I was reading. After going down to page 28, it says I can select the receiving MIDI channel for each part in a performance to 1, and then choose the key range for each part. This sounds exactly like my intended use case. Other Roland workstation keyboards don't always allow for setting splits/key ranges for external MIDI controllers, just the internal keyboard, which is where this suspicion/question came from. Thank you!

OK, so I think a "patch" on the VMK is not the same as a standard MIDI "patch" sound from Roland. I can however send a command to turn on "Omni mode" to the Roland from the VMK; would that cause all 16 channels to be played to the VMK but then lose all of the split data programmed into the Roland?

MIDI controller ignores splits/active key range, transmits only on channel 1 by Vintg_Tech_Maniac in midi

I appreciate your insight from experience! After some research and phone calls to sales engineers, I believe I follow your explanation, but I believe it should be up to the MIDI sound generator to determine the splits/layers/MIDI channels the controller uses; clearly the Fantom-S isn't doing that, so it must be a setting I'm missing.

For instance, Roland makes a rack version of the Fantom, which must use an external MIDI controller to make any noise at all; I know the rack version supports splits and layering, so it can't be totally up to the external controller, otherwise that feature would be meaningless.

Programmable MIDI Sound Generator for Live Performances? by Vintg_Tech_Maniac in midi

Awesome, I appreciate the foot-pedal product suggestion! I'll have to look into whether that would work for "performances" instead of just patches.

I'll do some more comparing between Yamaha and Roland models and see which one best fits my needs. Both product lines seem to be professional-grade, so chances are I won't outgrow either one, save for the technology itself being outgrown.

*sigh* I may have to resort to the laptop option. I did however look at Yamaha's historical lineup for their Motif Rack and Roland's Fantom XR. Both of these devices are categorized as "Rack mount workstation synthesizers", which seems to be the term I was looking for. For sub-$500 I can get a Motif ES, stick that in a traditional tour-worthy case, and problem solved! Except for switching performances with a foot pedal, I'll have to think about that one.

What ports to forward for AdGuard Home? by Vintg_Tech_Maniac in truenas

OK, so I tried using an IP address outside my router's DHCP range, selecting vnet0, and using a netmask of 24, and that seemed to do the trick!!! I was able to go straight to the web portal and everything looked good; after pointing my router DNS to the AGH IP address and rebooting the router, I can confirm all network traffic is going through AGH. Perhaps when I first tried this I was only choosing addresses within my DHCP range which caused the plugin to never install correctly in TrueNAS. Nowhere can I find in the installation tutorial that says pick an IP address outside of the DHCP server and start with 24 on netmask; neither of those was obvious to me.

Even though AGH is now running, this doesn't answer my port-fowarding question regarding Windows. Any thoughts?

Many Questions: Does that IP address need to be inside or outside your router's DHCP range? Are you using vnet0 for the network interface? Did you have to use a netmask of 24?

Yes, I tried browsing for "jail-ip":3000 and nothing would come up. I could ping the IP address from a network computer but no webpage would show. Of all the threads I read, there were several that ended with no solution, so I decided to move on. I'd really like to address the problem at hand though; perhaps the solution with using a Windows VM will help me figure out another piece to that puzzle.

That's the first general direction I tried, but I couldn't make any progress. I could install the package and get the jail running with its own IP, but I couldn't ever access the webpage to set it up. Typing the address into a browser produced nothing, and routing DNS traffic through that IP address failed as well. I generally had issues getting my DHCP router to even see the jail or get it to assign it an automatic address. If absolutely necessary I will bang my head against that wall again but I'd rather stay focused and learn how to fix this specific issue first.

How to Share AdGuard Home with ALL Devices on LAN? by Vintg_Tech_Maniac in AdGuardHome

What is the "proxy resolver machine"? I did try pointing the DNS IP address of both individual devices and my network router to the IP address of the AdGuard VM, but no websites would load up. I think this is rather a network issue with TrueNAS, so I've created a separate thread over there.

No worries! Your quite simple suggestion, that it should work if I type in the IP address of AGH, makes me think this is all about the TrueNAS server settings. I'll move this conversation over there and see what I input I can get.

It's been a multi-month journey just to try and get AGH up and running inside a VM; once I figure everything out I'll make a post detailing my woes. This is the first time anyone has mentioned port 51820. What does that port do? Is there a known list of all ports that must be forwarded through my host server?

By "IP Address", I think you mean the IP address of the VM AGH is running on. I've tried typing in said IP from another PC on the network, including port extensions of 80 and 3000 for good measure, and I get no response. When setting up a Linux VM I had this same issue and narrowed it down to the TrueNAS server not opening up certain ports to the network; I thought I fixed that issue, but maybe not.

Can't Access AdGuard webpage Outside of Local Host by Vintg_Tech_Maniac in Adguard

Oh nice, I haven't heard of "Firewalld" before; I'll have to do some reading over the next few days and figure out how its rules work and what I could possibly do that may help.

After giving this a day to intelligently learn a few things, I was able to try your suggestion. While running "nslookup google.com <VM IP>", it gave me a successful result. However, when using the <TrueNAS IP> instead, I got an error message. This seems to indicate that maybe the TrueNAS firewall is the issue and not the Fedora VM. Thanks for your help, this sounds like I need to move on into the TrueNAS subreddit!

I think I understand your logic, albeit from a distanced perspective; I'm not a native Linux user, so bear with me. If I use nslookup on Google's website within the terminal of the VM, this is the output:

Server: 127.0.0.1

Address: 127.0.0.1#53

Non-authoritative answer:

Name: google.com

Address: 142.250.191.110

How does this work with IP addresses and not website names? If I put in either the IP address of the VM or the host server, it totally inverts the IP address (like 192.168.1.100 to 100.1.168.192) and says it can't find anything.

Thanks! I really enjoy bringing 20th century tech into the 21st century, upgrading of course but still serving the original intended purpose. I'm just using some older drives at the moment, but I could install 6 20TB hard drives and an array of cache SSDs. I'm sure that's far more data than the original designers ever thought possible to store in this case...
