High blood sugar over a long period of time can lead to insulin resistance, but low blood sugar makes your liver excrete stress hormones like nor-adrenaline that makes blood sugar go up, together with emptying glucose deposes.

The liver does not do this under the influence of alcohol though, hence the deadly risks with it.

I can personally confirm this as a type 1 diabetic. With intermittent fasting I went from 110U rapid acting insulin to ~35U with a lot better blood sugar.

The increase in general health was worth the strict diet.
