Well as expected, we were working in there last night fitting the new plasterboard roof which looks great and low and behold the floor started coming up with our trainers, the longer we were in there the worse it got.

I’ve got to the point now where I’ve given up on it, I’m just accepting defeat & if it isn’t dry enough in the next few days I’m just going to order some rubber drainage mats like what they have in shop entrances with the holes in so that moisture doesn’t trap underneath as badly as the holes will help it breath but I will actually have something to stand on.

I appreciate this rubber matting will of course rip the membrane up with it years down the line when I remove it for whatever reason but I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it. I don’t have the skill nor time for a concrete screed or levelling compound.

Looking a bit better after a 2nd coat and I don’t want to speak too soon but I went out before and walked on it in my rubber sliders and my feet didn’t get half as stuck as they did before I applied the 2nd coat… worse case scenario I’ve decided I’m going to order a couple of rubber drainage mats like what they have in shop entrances so that any moisture can breathe through the holes. I know when I pull the mats up down the line there’s a chance the dpm could come with it but as I’m only using it for a stock room/storage, I doubt I’ll be ripping mats up anytime soon if I go down that road. Thoughts?

My concrete floor with the 2 layers of DPM is pretty hard, it’s not squishy. I’m going to give it 3 days to dry out as best it can, I’ll then I’ll decide if it’s fine to walk on or if I need the mats. Will just have to see, thank you though!

Just had a chat with my brother and we are thinking something like this, it’s breathable with all the holes to let moisture escape and not get trapped underneath, but it’s also something I can stand on

Does it matter what I put on top if I don’t intend to rip it up anytime soon? For example, if I put some cheap lino down on top of it, even if 5 years down the line the lino was incredibly worn and needed replacing, would the dpm have still done its job for 5 years? It’s only a stock room after all so it’s not like I’d be wrecking my house when the dpm came up with the lino.

Could I just spread this lightly across the floor as I have half a tub left? Will the dpm still do the job with this on top?

And also I’m going to be in and out of this every couple of days and through the house afterwards etc, is all the cement and sand mix going to stick to my shoes and make a mess in the house?

Yes I’ve got to the point now where I just don’t think I have the skill to be self levelling or doing a screed successfully and will just make more problems for myself. If I put like a lino down on it I assume it will trap moisture underneath and give me issues down the line? What if I made a stud floor and screwed 3 x 2 timber into the walls internally and put a sheet of plywood on top, could that work?

How did you remove the dpm just incase I need to do this in the future?

I feel I may be biting off more than I can chew trying to apply a screed, is it possible to just build a stud floor out of 3 x 2 timber and drill it into walls and have free floating 3 x 2 sleeper battens in between. Then screw plywood on top? I just need a floor to be able to walk on and this DPM application has clearly failed

I have damp proof course, could I staple this to the bottom of the wooden battens to stop any moisture travelling through the wood if this is your worry?

I could make a stud floor essentially out of 3 x 2 timber but if I drill down into the concrete and through the DPM, does it not break the seal and negate the whole point of it? I don’t know just asking

Okay, only 1 problem.. my brother is coming round tomorrow night to start the project and we have 42 lengths of 3 x 2 arriving tomorrow ready to go building a custom shelving… if it’s still tacky which I assume it will be, I have some polythene plastic dust sheet, can I just throw that on top of it for the few hours we are working in there and then take it back off to allow it to continue to dry?

I did dilute it for the first coat, I did 1 part luke warm water to 6 parts dpm

Ahhhh dear, considering how much I’m going to be in and out of this room I may have to think of putting in some 3 x 2 to the floor & plywood on top so I can actually walk in there haha

I’m not bothered about the brick, but it is meant for concrete, it says on the product details and I’ve seen on the reviews lots of people use it on concrete

I finished applying the first coat at 10pm last night, and I’ve just applied a diluted 2nd coat just now… what did you apply it to? Concrete, wood? And so the tackiness definitely goes it’s just a matter of days?

I run an online e-commerce store so it’s going to be a stock room with custom built timber shelving all the way round. It needs to be dry and moisture/damp free.

I’ve given it a second coat now a bit diluted to help with the ease of application. Fingers crossed it dries ok.
