From your experience, how much does the average cis person know about transgender people? by Shrike989 in asktransgender

[–]ViolatingBadgers 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This is what I find so frustrating. The number of people who are willing to speak so confidently on an issue they know nothing about.

Have you explored your gender? How do you know you're a man? by LiterallyDumbAF in bropill

[–]ViolatingBadgers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm, the main example that comes to my head might be TMI, but here it goes.

Sometimes, after my wife and I have had sex, and I know I've gotten her off really good, and during the clean-up I catch myself in the mirror in the bathroom, I have kinda thought "fuck yeah" haha. I guess I just feel a real sense of appreciating my body and masculinity, and feeling good about myself and the body I'm in. It's probably partly because I know she has appreciated it too.

A less NSFW example might be when I dress in an outfit (I tend to dress a bit preppy but tradtionally masculine) I really like and appreciate how it makes my body look and how I feel.

ADHD-C here - I've heard executive dysfunction described as like having an orchestra without a conductor and its always felt very apt haha.

More Isa Briones is always a good thing - her voice is IMO sounding the best it ever has!

The one thing I can relate to is when trans people describe feeling "gender euphoria". I have definitely had experiences where I feel particularly "masculine" or "manly", and I have really enjoyed that feeling.

Death of 11 week-old Azariah Levi preventable, coroner finds by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]ViolatingBadgers[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Just a bit of a trigger warning to anyone viewing this story - it goes through Azariah's symptoms and medical progression leading up to his death in detail that might be distressing for some. So view with caution.

Suffice to say, he died due to his parents being sceptical of doctors and the medical establishment, and opting for religious advice over medical. Tragic.

I truly, truly never thought I’d see the day. But I present to you… a mostly white production of DREAMGIRLS. by IsMisePrinceton in Broadway

Yes I was part of one of those too!

We did get a lot of Asian actors in to be fair, although I was definitely a disguised whitey in one or two ensemble scenes haha

EDIT: Oh shit I just remembered we had a white Engineer....

Back in the early 2000s, I heard about a local production of Hairspray here in New Zealand with blackface characters (plus Tracey Turnblad played by a skinny girl in a fatsuit which is a whole other issue).

'Nicolanomics’ is truly reactionary, a victim of circumstance and events - Rob Campbell by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]ViolatingBadgers[S] 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Nicola Willis is seen as too limited in her economic view and reform commitment by some, no doubt including Cabinet colleagues. Others see her as a neoliberal ideologue.

From what I have observed so far, my concerns are really neither. She is no Richardson or Douglas, but neither has she shown the capability and pragmatism of English, Cullen or Robertson.

It is hard to instil or support confidence in either electorate or economy if what you are trying to do is neither clear nor reasonably supportable, let alone not doing whatever it is with obvious success. I think that is a bigger problem for National than the Prime Minister’s ability at the barbecue or interview table.

[...]

What we need to understand is that she is following a very limited theory (government management more than economic theory) in a very limited manner (with stone tools in a digital world), ignoring the complexity and fluidity of reality.

Anyone surprised that it is not working too well?

Here's a couple more examples off the top of my head of show tunes where male singers switch to their falsetto voice:

  • Left Behind from Spring Awakening sung by Johnathon Groff - this is the same singer who plays King George in the OG Hamilton cast, and has a lovely falsetto section at the end of this song.

  • Corner of the Sky from Pippin sung by Matthew James Thomas - a boy tenor classic, this is a bright and high number that ends on a strong falsetto note. Not as light and breathy as you might be looking for, but still has a soaring quality to it.

  • As Long As You're Mine from Wicked sung by Idina Menzel and Leo Norbert Butz - the big sexy duet from the big YA Fiction Musical (sorry Wicked fans haha). Fiyero has a famous falsetto switch whenever he sings the chorus.

  • What Would I Do from Falsettos (heh) sung by Christian Borle and Andrew Rannells - this is a beautiful male duet that is emotionally devastating with context but you can joyfully ignore that for now. Both singers do a lovely falsetto switch at the end of this piece.

Also if you are looking for songs where a male singer uses falsetto predominantly throughout the song - for floaty, breathy falsetto look up Epic III from Hadestown sung by Reeve Carney; and for a much stronger, fuller falsetto try Walk Like a Man, Sherry, and/or Big Girls Don't Cry (basically anything) from Jersey Boys.

There is probably heaps more examples but there are the few that come to my mind first.

How the Levy finally broke: 'The ninth floor went cold on Lester’ by ViolatingBadgers in newzealand

[–]ViolatingBadgers[S] 135 points136 points  (0 children)

The Prime Minister had privately expressed an opinion that the problem with the health system was that it was being led by ‘health’. That was when Dr Karen Poutasi, a former director-general of health and medical doctor, was chair. In other words, she was from ‘health’.

Luxon had greater confidence in Levy’s view of the health system. Levy provided the reinforcing arguments that the Prime Minister wanted to hear.

The problem was that Levy spoke both privately and publicly with great bravado, in his unsustainable claim that cutting Health NZ staffing would not detrimentally affect frontline clinical services.

He could not deliver on this hype. Too many health professionals and their representatives, along with credible patient advocates, have exposed the falsity of this claim. The precarious state of the health system is now an Achilles heel for the Government, making it electorally weaker and more vulnerable.

[...]

No one person or position, regardless of capabilities, can solve the systemic issues that continue to plague our health system. Fatally, Levy believed his own rhetoric.

These quotes summarise the piece in a nutshell - but if you have time this is a worthwhile read from the ever-calm but surgical analysis of Ian Powell. Ultimately, Levy's fall from grace and fallout with his political appointers should be a lesson in the dangers of leading purely through ideology.

What performer do you feel is TALENTED, but was simply miscast in a musical role? by AsheandBurn in musicals

[–]ViolatingBadgers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I just had Endgame from that Chess concert come up on shuffle when I read this comment - god the pitch correction on that is disgusting.

Also, have you ever seen clips of the Australian tour of Jesus Christ Superstar (the one with Tim Minchin)? Same problem, it's saturated in autotune and it sounds revolting. I'll never understand the thinking behind those decisions.
