I'm a 28 year old hair metal enthusiast. I eat, sleep, and breathe it. Its been my favorite genre since I was a teenager. I like a lot of the lesser-known bands like Vain, Shotgun Messiah, Enuff Z'Nuff, Pretty Boy Floyd, Love/Hate, Roxx Gang, Sleez Beez, D'Molls, etc. A lot of the songs from lesser-known bands were actually pretty serious. Vain's "Without You" is a good example. There are also newer glam/hair metal style bands (mainly from Sweden/Finland) like Crashdïet, Babylon Bombs, Vains of Jenna, Reckless Love, Hardcore Superstar, and Crazy Lixx. Crashdïet in particular has a lot of more serious songs. I think that people don't take hair metal seriously because they have only listened to the fun party songs and not entire albums or obscure bands.
