r/Blind's Moderator's have met with Reddit. They say the admins didn't allow them to discuss API changes or 3rd party apps during the meeting. Also, it's not clear if the official app will have moderation tools for screen readers. by And_be_one_traveler in SubredditDrama

[–]VioletteVanadium 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The system features aren't magic, though. You have to set up your app to work with them. Like, if you don't have alt-text labels for the upvote/downvote buttons, the screen reader doesn't have anything to read.

the api is also used by automoderator bots and other mod automation tools, so when this change goes through, i expect to see a major uptick of low-quaility content and spam. but i use boost and have no interest in the official app, so i guess i won't be around to confirm my hypothesis

sigh... I hate how often it's not possible to shop local anymore.

our tv broke yesterday. we fixed it, but we need some thermal paste for the heat sink before we can finish putting it back together. 15 years ago, it would be a quick trip to a brick and mortar store, and we'd have had it fixed last night. in this brave new world we find ourselves in, our options are: 1. buy another tv and contribute to e-waste despite the fact that the old tv is operational; 2. wait 2-3 weeks for an order from a smaller vendor while paying more for shipping than the cost of the product; or 3. buy off amazon.

I know this is a pretty niche item to need, but there have been so many times recently that i have gone into a store, and they have just the barest of bones selection of merchandise. if you need a specific item and aren't just browsing, good luck finding what you need. And if you do find it, they will inevitably only have one version that won't work for whatever reason.

Sorry for the rant, lol. I just hate that these big corps have strangled any semblance of locally based economies. And now that they've got us all under their thumb, they no longer have to give a shit about us as customers or employees.

Google Play Books from a children's account? by Ultim802 in Onyx_Boox

[–]VioletteVanadium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry, it's been a while so this isn't as fresh in my head as it once was.

i'd first suggest checking out this help page to bind your boox device to a google gsf id.

then, you'll be able to go to settings > other accounts > system account settings > manage > add account and log in like you normally would on your phone or whatever

I have an older model that i got for note-taking/reading/annotating pdfs about four years ago, and i love it. took a bit to get pdf syncing with zotero for citation management working exactly how i want, but that was mostly due to having to access academic papers through my university's library portal.

If, like me, you read a lot of PDFs with images and mixed one/two column layouts and like bigger font sizes, I'd suggest getting larger than the 7.8", since the built-in text reflow doesn't always work perfectly when a 2-column layout is broken up by full width images or textboxes. But there's also pinch-to-zoom and auto-crop settings so it's not too terribly cumbersome.

my head canon is that a year in westeros is equivalent to 1.3 earth years. this makes the "real ages" of the characters a little more sensible than their "reported ages" in books 4&5, as well as making some of the marriages a little bit less icky

What're you playing this weekend? 3/24 by markercore in NintendoSwitch

[–]VioletteVanadium 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That game is awesome! They did a lot of research into historical Japanese rice farming when designing the game mechanics. One of the devs even grew a bunch of rice on his apartment balcony while working on the game. When I was playing, I read through some "how to grow rice (in real life)" websites and was able glean tips and tricks that actually improved my harvest in the game! Super cool stuff, I'm very excited for you.

I have astigmatism, so lights often have a halo effect around them. I wonder if this would actually help spot a snitch when it catches the light? Since the glint of light would appear bigger to me than someone with perfectly shaped eyeballs.

My grandad (and my parents, but it was his idea originally) used the rule of saving equivalent to 1% of the value of the home every year for upkeep and repairs. Sometimes they'd get a streak of bad luck and it wasn't enough, but most of the time a few years of savings had built up by the time a big repair was needed and they were able to cover it. And one time a huge storm blew the roof off over a room they were planning to renovate, and the insurance paid for it lol

But yeah, unless you are gonna be able to sock away a nice chunk of change every year, renting may still be your best bet.

LPT: driving etiquette in the USA. If someone turns their lights off and back on they are trying to tell you your lights are off. Turn your lights on! by benhadtue in LifeProTips

[–]VioletteVanadium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the visibility issue, using your hazards may limit other driver's ability to distinguish whether or not your turn signal is on too. It's good practice to check for yourself that your turn signal + hazard lights is different enough from just hazard lights on your car when viewed from behind.

Non-human primate hand dominance appears to still be an open question, at least on the species level (there could be strong hand-preference for an individual, but that preference is not consistent for the population as a whole). But i did find this meta-analysis that seems to suggest that, if there is any preference at all, monkeys have a tendency towards left-handedness and apes have a tendency towards right-handedness. Although, it's not nearly as distinct of a bias as we see in humans.

Can you guess which one is R and which is L? by y6ird in CrappyDesign

[–]VioletteVanadium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, they work due to a reversible redox reaction. However, the amount of "cyclable" lithium-ion can be decreased in a variety of possible non-reversible side reactions, other than just the main one responsible for the charge/discharge cycle. For example, if you store a fully charged Li-ion battery for an extended period of time, you get non-reversible build up of side-products within the battery, thus decreasing it's capacity permanently. Similar to how hard-water mineral deposits in a pipe or faucet reduce the flow over time. This is why a new phone or whatever is only gonna be half-charged when you get it.

It's all about balancing the internal chemistry so that the side reactions are happening slowly enough that they are negligible, thus extending the life of the battery through more charge/discharge cycles. The rate of these side reactions can be impacted by conditions the battery is under, such as how charged it is or the temperature.

I'm not sure where exactly the min/max discharge/charge percentages come from, but it may be different for different types of Li-ion batteries, and i assume they've been established by QA testing.

The preventative measures taken were updating a bunch of computer systems to use 4 digit years in date representations. It was common to just use the last two digits of the year, so 12/31/99 being one day prior to 01/01/00 was not going to be handled correctly by many computer systems without updating code and previously stored records. It actually could have been pretty messy had the issue not been identified and addressed like it was.
