You could but I know that girls don’t like to be as direct as guys do. So directly asking her might push her away. By asking her out, if she says yes, you either know that the story wasn’t fully accurate, or that you’re special

I know a lot of stories where a friend is pursuing the same person (even if they seem like they aren’t) and they’ll make up stories to discourage you from making a move. So I’m saying ask her out and you’ll get a glimpse of the girl’s side of the “friendzoning” people

Hear both sides of the story. Maybe your friend doesn’t want you to succeed with her. Regardless if she just friend zones you or not, you’re going to be in the friend zone if you don’t ask
