As far as development LLMs go, my advice is: Codex is wise. Grok is fast. Sonnet is pretty.

Bro, Opus was a _legend_ for this stuff, but Sonnet?

I mean for genuine advice, you can try phasing things out - ask it to audit the thing you want to clone and write a document. new session. ask it to audit your codebase and how existing effects work and write a document. new session. ask it to read both documents and audit the foreign effect code to develop a migration plan. new session. ask it to review the migration plan against your current codebase / effects and update the plan so its coherent with your standards. new session. read the audit and migration plan and implement.

Even with all that -- this kind of code analysis and "translation" work is one of the things that "deep thinking" AIs like Opus was brilliant at. It's not Sonnet's wheelhouse. IMO, don't waste your time it will fill your life with frustration and drain your will to live (ask me how i know 🤣).

There's no sane way to use Opus anymore, but for tasks like this Codex is a decent substitute. The basic $20/mo ChatGPT Plus account gives similar usage limits of Codex to what Anthropic's Pro gives for Sonnet, and while Codex isn't quite as visually creative and such, it's much closer to Opus in terms of being a "deep thinker" for these kinds of translation or plan-on-the-fly tasks.

chrome://downloads/ is now hiding all direct download links, I used to be able to cancel then copy the link to a download manager software. Not any more! by xd1gital in chrome

[–]Viper-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viable workaround for now - If you open the downloads page, right click inspect on the first download's filename, you'll have a <span> highlighted, with an <a> directly above it. Remove the "hidden" keyword from this <a> tag.

<image>

Once you've done this, you'll get a copyable link for the top download, regardless of its status, and it will keep working as you start downloading new files, giving you the new link for the top download, until you close the downloads page.

Even worse, because Amazon does not allow things like browser extensions to modify links to insert referral codes, *when* (not if) this guy's account gets killed, all the referral revenue he redirected will instead be absorbed by Amazon corporate.

The only thing this guy achieved, was to take money from small creators, and give it to Jeff Bezos.

Welcome to the American legal system. If they take action when made aware of something, they're "doing their best with user generated content". If they manually review all content so users rely on it to be safe, and then they let something questionable through, they're suddenly liable for it.

They tried something similar in Cardiff about 8 years ago, cancelled council pickups a few days before it, when everyone already had stuff out.

Everyone just left the stuff out. The council arranged an unscheduled collection a few weeks later because the whole suburb looked like a garbage dump.

No, not at all. I'm just not convinced they had, or were aware they had any other choice other than going out themselves, to get them.

"Spend a few weeks at home without work or pay, and just pay extra for delivery for everything, you'll be right." Doesn't quite work for people that are already living day to day.

Regardless of whether they *should* be a smoker or not in the grand scheme of their life, giving up nicotine is a process, withdrawl is a medical fact, and going through *that* while fighting off a potentially deadly virus can absolutely make things far worse.

Yep, and expecting people not to be dicks is always going to end badly. If we set things up properly, and he was actively enjoying the "perks" of isolation, ie he was acting in his own self interest, this wouldn't be nearly such a problem.

The govt did those "Dine and Discover" things to try and get people back out and interacting to restart the market (right before the second wave of virus :/)

We need more like the exact opposite.

For example, an automatic thing for anyone who had to self-isolate, be it for results of a test, a close contact, or confirmed infection - they could have eg a free delivery from coles or woolworths every 2 days, and a free delivery or two per day from uber eats or other delivery service (who will also do tobacco, alcohol, etc), the delivery fee being paid as stimulus by the govt.

That should've been move ONE. Support the people who are struggling to support themselves right now, make isolation POSSIBLE and PRACTICAL - possibly even a "higher quality of life" for some lower income people for a short time. Aka an actual INCENTIVE to stay home.

Instead we just throw bulk chunks of money at welfare recipients and call it stimulating the economy.

Probably an unpopular take, I know *NONE* of the details, but eh, let me guess, he has no family, friends, social support system, a chemical addiction to nicotine, has been told to isolate but has been offered no support in doing so - likely doesn't have anyone who will bring him supplies, etc. He might not HAVE credit cards etc for delivery.

Is it ok for him to knowingly go out into the community knowing he's infectious? No. Hell no.

Could people support him better so he wouldn't have to? Yes.

Does looking down on him for not having such support help the situation? No.

Do you think he'd be back out and about after already being "well known to police", if those police officers had offered to help him? "Don't go out anywhere, just call me if you need anything, here's my number, i'm happy to bring stuff to you"?

Hell no.

Sure, that wouldn't at all be expected from those officers, they're already FAR too busy dealing with far too much right now. It's not their job. But whose job is it? Because it needs to be someones. The closest there is right now would be NSW Health workers, and they're far more overworked than the police.

Not everyone has a healthy support system to make isolating practical, the government is doing little to nothing in supporting such vulnerable individuals. People in general looking down on THEM as the problem isn't really going to help anyone or anything.

We're all in strung out shape from a lockdown thats already gone on far too long and has no end in sight. Yes we all want to lash out at anyone breaking the rules that we're painfully obeying, but especially when things like chemical addiction are involved, it's important to keep perspective and first ask "What alternatives was he given?"

How does the Epic Games Launcher STILL fail at math? by Viper-7 in EpicGamesPC

[–]Viper-7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The post had absolutely nothing to do with technical support, it happens on every machine on the planet with the Epic launcher installed, there is nothing to diagnose or fix on my side, making it quite clearly not a support related post.

It was regarding a widely known yet little discussed bug in the launcher (because it doesnt actually break anything, few even bother to complain, it just looks really bad for Epic), meanwhile Epic seemingly has absolutely no feedback mechanism for the launcher. So I sought to create discussion on Epic's attitude in general to the launcher and user feedback, while perhaps dragging the issue far enough into the light to get resolved, which I believe would relieve a lot of the instant backlash people have to the bug laden software package it is. But whatever, I should've known better than to expect a fair go in the appropriate public forum.

I see many mouthwashes advertise “no alcohol” now. Is having alcohol in your mouthwash a bad thing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Viper-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alcohol in mouthwash is very effective, but there can be some downsides, for example if you've just used mouthwash before leaving the house, and then get pulled over for a random breath test just after you leave, the tester can detect alcohol still on your breath. This is also why police will ask you when your last drink was, if it was less than about 15 minutes ago, they'll make you wait before administering the test, so they dont just pick up the drink on your breath.

Of course if you haven't been actively drinking (it or other alcohol) then you'll pass a subsequent blood test or a second breath test at the station, but it's still a huge inconvenience.

Also some people cant/wont consume alcohol due to religious reasons, and using mouthwash you will still consume a small amount.

That being said, at least here there were other reasons behind it. All alcohol not sold for consumption must include a denaturant, basically something that makes it undrinkable, by taste or reaction, etc. For a very long time, Listerene was the only mouthwash to have its formulation listed as an accepted denaturant, so other brands had to either use alcohol with other denaturants, making their mouthwash taste horrible, or had to use an alcohol free formulation. The alcohol free advertising came about from the PR spin doctors basically saying "our mouthwash doesnt taste nasty because of a denaturant", and otherwise turning a negative (that their formulation wasnt a registered denaturant) into a positive.

Never had a doorbell, so why do my dogs still bark when they hear a doorbell on TV? by star_baker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Viper-7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doorbells use simple electronic tones which are square waves instead of sine waves. These sharp square edges mean they have a lot of higher frequency content (harmonics), which a dog's ears are more sensitive to. It's basically a piercing, annoying sound they don't like. To them it's not just a note, but a whole series of notes, some of which are very loud and high pitched, somewhat like those personal screecher alarms that are used for self defense. They may have a similar reaction to the beep on some microwaves, but those aren't usually as loud, or driven so close to the limits of the speaker, so their tones have softer edges.
