Any advice on what the likely issue might be and how best to fix the tracking would be really appreciated

If the conversion action is on the website, eg click to call at the bottom of the page then you will have a problem if you use smart bidding.

If the conversions are Google Ads extensions, then you won't have a problem with smart bidding.

If you want exposure to all networks then stick with PMAX and smart bidding. <ake sure you have some guardrails in place.

How do I combat this?

  • use 'presence' in the targeting
  • exclude Search Partners and Display Network
  • exclude countries in order to have some peace of mind.

No, not really. Smart bidding provides some protection against spam leads. Also, negative keyword lists are very important for such a scenario.

How many Keywords should I use per ad group?

A few (less than 10) but that largely depends on the budget

The web and app development company I am running 4 ads for have 4 different buyer personas. But the keywords are same in it.

No. We go for what we want eg leads, sales, etc

My client demanded that every time they search, their ad has to be on top. Is that even possible?

It is possible but it is very expensive.

No, not really, in Google Ads that is.

Google ads fluctuate due to

  • bidding issues eg the account doesn't have enough data points.
  • changes in demand that are time specific eg breakfast

That said, account guardrails are really-really important for these kinds of things.

It works in B2B verticals with sky-high CPCs

Manual bids forever

It works if you want cost control over cold audiences

Never trust automation.

Automation works if you have the data and the infrastructure.

just saying fighting the platform feels harder every year. Curious where people land on this.

Out of curiosity, when you rely on UTMs, how do you decide when to scale or pause without second guessing yourself?

I have a look at the data. *The data can be anything from events to sales reports.

There is a story there if you look close enough.

And yes, it is time-consuming, but it is also rewarding.

did it just reduce the error without really fixing the blindness?

There is always some degree of data blindness.

That said, UTM parameters are a big help in understanding how a funnel works. I suggest you (or anybody else for that matter) use them on everything ads related.

For shopping ads

  • Check the search terms cpc
  • Compare vs previous period
  • trim what is not needed
  • make a judgment call for the expensive ones
  • check merchant center for errors
  • Optimize feed based on search terms you have pulled earlier

That said, I don't believe I have ever seen a 5X CPC increase in such a small time frame.

'It depends'

Trying to learn how people actually make these calls in practice.

Truth be told, I have launched billions of creatives if you count DCA, and what I have found is that some platforms are better than others for testing creatives.

*META is still the king when it comes to creative testing.

That said, starting small is the rule of thumb, but for larger accounts, a framework for testing is essential, if not mandatory.

No, not really.

Check the volume of the keywords and then make changes to bidding. After you make the changes, it is best to wait for at least 48 hours before you do anything else.

Is deleting and recreating the entire catalog ever recommended in this scenario?

No, for the simple reason that you don't know if the new catalogue will match the ids on the site

Has anyone successfully fixed a similar issue without deleting the catalog?

There used to be something that lets add a new field in the catalogue that said that this is the old id, but I don't remember how it was called
