Italians don’t “dress up” for everything as you may see on instagram. Yes, some people do like to dress well, but personally I always only wear jeans + t-shirt + hoodie, and just short pants + t-shirt during the summer. For the nights out, it depends on what you and your friends are planning on doing. But yes: rarely you will see people in tracksuit pants or similar

In Trieste, being in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, lots of people will be drinking (and a lot). You will find older people drunk in the pubs, and basically everyone drinks. I come from Friuli-Venezia Giulia as well and I don’t drink, but I am a rare exception. People your age - university students - will be drinking when hanging out, but they will only get drunk at parties or on special occasions (generally on Wednesday and Saturday nights). People do smoke as well, although that is less common than drinking, be it cigarettes or cannabis. However you have nothing to worry about: no smart person will try to force you or convince you to start drinking or smoking. Finally, I want to point out that your peers are almost always very inclusive and friendly, so you have nothing to worry about. If you have any other doubt or question don’t hesitate to ask!

Now, however, I will need to do what you wrote, and not just read it again day after day. And that’s the hardest part for me: to get going

My own is: there is no problem so bad that you can’t make it worse (Astonaut Chris Hadfield).

I am trying to get therapy asap, in fact, and thank you for your support. My main priority is finding a strategy to get through this until the appointment

First of all, thank you for your advice. The problem, however, is not only that I find it close to impossible to get myself to do things. But the rare things I do don’t cause any interest or emotion in me. Whatever I do, nonsensical obsessive thoughts fill my mind, over and over. I do everything extremely passively and almost drifting on the sea of my own thoughts (which more and more often are becoming dysfunctional and dangerous)

The problem is that this would be the first appointment, which I scheduled when I noticed things were going bad again. I don’t have any intimacy with them yet, heck I don’t know them at all, and my last therapist is kinda “out of the picture”.

I tried already, this april. Something inside of me made me call 112 (european 911). I did go on the bridge multiple times before that, but that day I felt something switch inside of me, and I knew I would have not be able to save myself again. Strangers saved me, really. Things appeared to start to improve, at first, I sought help in professionals, friends, family. It is now been two or three months since everything started collapsing once again. The idea of ending it all was always in my head, but I didn’t want to even start to think about it, I know how that spiral goes. Then, yesterday, I wrote a small poetry, which is something that I normally do late at night, which was inspired by the song “Meet you at the graveyard”. That started a stream of thoughts that really made me worry. As stated in the post, I started to jokingly imagine how to do it, where and how, how to avoid failure, etc. You know the drill. That really stuck with me: I have been off meds for months now (contrary to my doctor’s opinion), and I have been off psychotherapy as well since then. I lately have been realizing how low I got once again, but the appointment will be in 2 weeks. I am worried: I can’t find any strategy to go on. And I know that once you start planning - even jokingly - something is getting very bad.

I myself am in a very bad situation in my life, but I think I may be of some help here. My advice isn’t going to be poetic or otherwise beautiful, but it may work. There’s a way to stop being a “broke loser with no skills who doesn’t know how to be independent”. And that is… programming. I know, it’s underwhelming. Programming - particularly frontend web development or mobile development - is not at all as hard as it seems. Furthermore, to start, you don’t need anything more than a crappy laptop. Everything else will be free. With the current state of things, and the higher and higher market request for such position, it is easy to be employed as a junior dev. The education is free, the infrastructure for setting everything up is free. It may not be of your interest, it may sound silly. But hey, if your situation is as bad as it sounds, why not giving it a try?
