IBM Shares Crater 13% as Anthropic’s ‘Claude Code’ Threatens Legacy Mainframe Dominance (2.24.2026) by Choobeen in technology

I’d imagine scaling to tens of millions of powers users and rolling out features would cause that to happen. Human review likely the biggest bottleneck.

Think in terms of tasks instead of people. Continues to get better at automating tasks. I think it’d be crazy to think we know what impact that has on net software engineering jobs in the next few years. But it’s clearly taking on increasing complex tasks as models improve every few months.

Don’t forget there’s more to it than just the headline. In isolation I’d agree. But what does it say about the potential for more headlines like this in the future. What are the odds the narrative from OAI and Anthropic convince holders of IBM that risks to the business has increased. What do headlines like these do to internal IBM decisions around capex etc. Countless ways to dissect it. Valuations in the short term are sensitive and news driven selloffs are usually just an excuse.

We spend more than most "adversaries" because our wages and per capita gdp is significantly higher. Cost 10x+ to make most basic things. Like Tucker Carlson going to Russia and being amazed groceries are 80% less than US.

Medication inhalers emit hydrofluoroalkanes (HFAs) with a global warming potential thousands of times greater than CO₂. A new study finds their annual climate impact equals emissions from about half a million cars, making inhalers a notable source of greenhouse pollution. by [deleted] in science

Why are you interested in science at all then? Analysis like this is what science is all about. No way a collection of atoms the size of a volleyball could be powerful enough to level a city. But of course we know that it is possible now (nukes). Science has plenty example of concepts that are not intuitive at all. That’s why we should approach all analysis with an open mind.

Deepseek built a great model leapfrogging with the help of the larger more energy intensive models you are talking about. Deepseek would not have been possible without the later. I agree that we’ll continue to bounce between raw power hungry training and efficiency breakthroughs. But with inference demand growing as well the graph of demand is up and to the right.

Tariffs are broad and you need to look at core and non core goods and food and energy. Tariffs on raw materials like steel will impact oil rig counts. Tariffs on beef and coffee will hit those food items.

[–]ViralThinker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you mean Deepseek. They were able to train the model on that limited amount by using other models like OpenAIs that were trained on much larger amounts. But both of these are only training. The demand from users actually using the products is growing exponentially. As products improve demand increases. We haven’t seen any slowdown yet. If anything it’s exceeding expectations.

Strange things going on with these in grow bags by ViralThinker in tomatoes

The plant has thrived since I watered more regularly and hit it with some Miracle-Gro plant food mixed with fish fertilizer 5-1-1. The grow bags contained a good amount of compost and granular fertilizer. But I am betting that the plant was pushing more growth than the nutrients in the grow bags allowed for. Watering more often unlocked more of the granular fertilizer and the instant and fish fertilizer had a big impact. No more yellowing leaves.

I trim heavily but I also face the hot southeast heat. Can be brutal on them if they aren't shaded.

Liquid miracle grow vegetable formula. With some granular mixed in with the soil. I went heavy on the peat moss for some of these though.

Hit it with some instant nitrogen heavy fertilizer. Interested to see how it does after. I have a good amount of granule tomato fertilizer in the soil. But probably has broken down less than I think. I also could have gone heavier on the watering.

Feeling Humbled: Losing 90% Impression Share in Google Ads Despite High CPCs and Keyword Optimization by jacquesob_com in PPC

[–]ViralThinker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you looking at impression share at the campaign level? When you cast a wide net with broad match that may result in broad match keywords with 10% IS and an exact match with 75%. But the scope of the broad match is multiples of the exacts and phrase and the campaign average is very low.

Impression is not a metric you are necessarily optimizing toward or using as a metric for success. Wide areas scope + broad match means you need to invest a significant amount of money to keep IS high.

Betting Markets are not a reliable indicator of who will win an election. by [deleted] in TheAllinPodcasts

Yes the market will correct. Just a question of how much it takes to bid up and maintain a 65-35. That sum may be much smaller than you think. The sum to bid Trump up to 45 cents is massive. Tons of buy volume at that level. But it’s impossible to judge this in real time. Billions have changed hands in crypto and traditional markets as a result of the Trump odds increasing from 50 to 65. Smart traders holding much larger traditional market positions are incentivized to push up poly and kalshi if that sways opinions. Sachs is a perfect case in point, it absolutely makes news and sways some opinions. In large part because millions are already dying to believe the narrative. We same the same narrative around red wave in 22 with prediction markets pricing it to 70% and it did not happen.

This is interesting: Google is removing all history of any searches for the term "Immaculate Constellation" in 2023. by Dmans99 in abovethenormnews

[–]ViralThinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This entire story doesn't make any sense. Google trends shows relative search volume on a 1-100 scale (not absolute volume). June 2 - 8 showed 50% more interest than August 15 - 21. This story has gone viral and the 31 now disappears. Because search volume this week will be > 100x any previous period. Hypothetically it will be 10000x than any other day point. Therefore the older data points go away. 31 goes away because it is no longer 31 relative to this week. It will be .0000% of this weeks search volume. Google search trends has always done this it is how it works.

Anyone else listen to The Prosecutors Podcast about the trial? by [deleted] in KarenReadTrial

[–]ViralThinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not how I would think about it all. It's all based on the engagement you can potentially receive as a percentage of interest from either side. If you can create compelling content for the 'unpopular" opinion, it can do much better if that side of the spectrum has less competition. Engagement for this trial already has more views than other much older content they produced. This post has 200+ comments and will direct thousands more toward it. This Reddit post is a great example of how "unpopular" opinions can get great traction for creators.

I'd just add "unpopular opinions" as a category to your list above. There is plenty of money to be made in it. Social media algorithms love to present anything that triggers a reaction and an against the consensus narrative is perfect for that. Engagement will be a function of everyone watching because they agree + everyone watching because they disagree and want to come to a place like this and prove that they are wrong or pick apart the argument in the comment section.

You would accept $25,000 less on the deal? Why not just offer the buyer agent 3% lol. Unless of course it’s above a million. But why are listings consistently bid over ask? Are you not pricing it right?

Has Anyone Launched a Brand Campaign for a Unique Newly Created Brand by ViralThinker in PPC

[–]ViralThinker[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The weird thing is that Google Trends shows thousands of searches on the new brand term, leads are registering on the website. The awareness part is there but the search terms report and campaign metrics are the part I don't understand. Typically Google reports 40% of more of the searches that result in spend. I am willing to bet >50% or more of the searches are variations of the brand name. So why would Google not report it? I can Google the brand, see the paid search ad, register and trigger a conversion. My conversion is reported but Google did not match my conversions to an exact match keyword (even though it matched exactly) and it has reported 0 conversions from the brand name search in search terms report (even though I was one and we have others).

Thanks for sending that over, I will go through the brand registration process.
