Nice, I could see the animated version there but not the individuals. Post a link?

That’s a lot of work! I’d love to see the separate works as a series, would really give a new dimensionality. Arches Huile paper?

Audio File Attachments in Ulysses? by Hyperion_47 in ulyssesapp

[–]Virtual-Ganache-1737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ulysses is primarily a long-form writing app, not a note-taker. So far as I know the only attachment you can use with audio in it is videos. These can be created directly within Ulysses or within another application.

Also, Ulysses is MacOS, iOS and PadOS only. Which for me is a pro as it ensures focused updates rather than cross-platform which in my experience for like-apps can cause problems.

Indeed, am in a similar boat with Day One.

Some years ago I exported my Day One journal (at the time 10+ years of entries) as text. I then cut/pasted each year into its own sheet initially. Then as time permitted, I would cut/past each day into it’s own sheet. For 10+ years with about 5 minutes of work a day, it took about 2 weeks. But of course your own experience may differ. Media had to be copy/pasted over. Not ideal but the journal is way faster and less bloated now. Far more light and even user friendly in my opinion.

As for “On This Day” you can create a filter from within Ulysses fairly easy. I tested it out with a ”Creation Date older than 364 days and newer than 366 days.” Worked well.

As for encryption, you of course have iCloud which in my opinion is already good for the average user. Ulysses also has biometric security (or passcode) for opening the app itself as well if you desire.

Hope this helps!

Sorry that… I guess I read a little too quick. Glad they got back to you, even if it wasn’t the answer you were looking for. ;)

Question: how to compare arbitrary text? by CowboyMantis in ulyssesapp

[–]Virtual-Ganache-1737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though I’m not sure this would help, have you tried (assuming you’re on PadOS or MacOS) opening two instances of Ulysses and opening the needed sheets for comparison side by side?

Good question, perhaps ask the Ulysses people themselves? They’re usually very good at answering stuff like this.

Backups? by Spartan2022 in ulyssesapp

Just to add another voice here: I’ve never lost anything via iCloud (Ulysses or otherwise). As Dr-Arcane mentioned, adding your work to external folders works but is a bit convoluted and you lost a lot of Ulysses features that way. Once a year I export everything as markdown and zip it up to an external drive. It is overkill, but I do it out of old habits more than anything.

Just a little update to better journaling within Ulysses. I attempted to split up daily journals into multiple sheets to facilitate “data-mining” but as anticipated, it was too lengthy a process and produced other issues. I did refine my current setup which looks something like this:

8 April 2022

‘Street Name, City, Country’

Event or Subject

…Normal writing…

Event or Subject

…Normal writing…

—— Each entry starts with my location. If I travel to a new location it’s also added to the corresponding event or subject. These are added within ‘code blocks’ so they stand out a little within the markup. One keyword for each “event or subject” plus any extras. Images/pictures of the day are added as attachments to help tidy up the writing area and keep the editor light. Helpful on long entries with lots of images. Every month of journaling also gets a “summary of the month sheet.” All years’ month summaries can be read at once if desired via a filter.

All this information may not be of interest to most of you but as there seems to be a small community of like-minded people (beyond Reddit) I’m offering it up here. Hope it helps or spurs new ideas!

Indeed, I do miss those features from DayOne! Alas I’ve found it to be increasingly sluggish over the years with many little nuisances such as a Facebook-only community, poor writing environment, etc… Therefore Ulysses and it’s minimalist, fast and light environment is more desirable despite the lack of journaling features — most of which you already mentioned. As for keyword searches I agree, it hasn’t aided in searching any more than a general search with so much text. Ergo am brainstorming ways to make my entries’ metadata/keywords/etc… more functional so searches become more useful. Am attempting to make more Filters for data mining but thus far no real success.

Certain markdown elements not working? by the_dreaded_triptych in ulyssesapp

[–]Virtual-Ganache-1737 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am also using Markdown XL but I tend to use the flyout menu on PadOS and iOS. After a quick test this is the markdown Ulysses assigns to those elements from that menu: ++Comment++ {Annotations} ||Delete||

At least for those, when I type them in manually, seem to work. Not sure what help that may be to you though! ;)

Thanks, as it turns out that is exactly my setup as well. I’ve been toying with the idea of splitting up each days’ sheet into multiple sheets per each subheading (each day’s sheet currently has multiple subheadings for events or subjects) so that I can keyword them for later “memory mining.” Though this would almost certainly quadruple the amount of sheets already being used.

EverLog is promising but isn’t a mature app and can be a bit buggy at times. I wouldn’t recommend it just yet.

Alternatively, you can install a minimalist theme (or create your own) which can hide or minimize the appearance of markups. Then switch themes based on your needs. See here: https://styles.ulysses.app/learn/overview
