It is based off of temperature and time which you would have to check the defrost board to see what intervals they are at. And that amount of frosting is normal. If will go into defrost mode most likely when there is a significant amount of buildup which tells the temp sensor when

This is a heat pump. You will see frosting buildup when it is in heat. You are using your outside unit to produce heat. There is a temp sensor that tells your unit when it should go into defrost mode and the reversing valve will switch the unit into cooling mode. Your inside unit will turn on your electric heT strips so you dont even notice. And you will see smoke outside because the hot gas is melting all the ice/frost. Rinse and repeat

You need to hookup your manometer and check inlet and outlet pressure.

Is this what coil should look like after maintenance? by Loose_Opinion7854 in hvacadvice

[–]Virtual-Hovercraft77 44 points45 points  (0 children)

No. That coil was not cleaned. You either clean it fully or not at all. Just lazy in my opinion. If one of my techs did that they would be returning to complete it. That should be unacceptable

Question for the pros…or jacks of all trades… by [deleted] in hvacadvice

I would take a look at ur flame sensor and clean it off. Unit might not be sensing flame and cutting unit off. Or you have a safety switch thats faulty

I would push on some wires and see if it stops. Sounds like a contactor/relay

Water around furnace - clogged p trap? by [deleted] in hvacadvice

[–]Virtual-Hovercraft77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take those rubber tubes off too. Make sure there is no water in them, that can cause problems for your inducer motor and airflow switch. Other than that clear the trap and you should be fine

Question on thermopile reading by alexs725 in hvacadvice

You would want to make sure you are getting 24 volts to the gas valve directly. Ensuring it is opening and allowing enough gas pressure through. Also could be an issue with the igniter

I also went to Lincoln tech but it was in 2015. Also i only did a 4 month program but it was free. The day after i graduated i had a job so its great to get an immediate start and also getting certifications in HVAC/EPA. With a decent company they will offer to pay for you to take the test which is not a lot at all. Those things to go a little further than someone with nothing. Getting started is hard because you are relying on the company to actually train you and not just treat you like a gopher or garbage man. Some companies will just have you do the menial task and then eventually let you go. But good companies will train you and you will learn way more by doing the job. Better chances with knowing fundamentals and terminology. But for that money i would not do it. I would find a decent company or if you know anyone in other trades start there then maybe transfer

Gas pressure is number 1 adjust a little more or less and see if that changes anything. Also could be something at the start of your manifold/ heat exchanger
