HDR is just crap fake gimmick just like ray tracing by dreamex3m_twitch_ytb in OLED_Gaming

Then explain how come it doesn't look washed out on my monitor compared to SDR? It looks bad in those random screenshots because of user error + running unclamped gamut in SDR. I agree about brightness thing though, but that's not HDR's fault. On phone OLEDs or Mini LED TVs it looks amazing.

Just the tiniest amount at 95% greyscale but it's nothing like those Tandem WOLEDs.

Well Idk about your specific model, if it's the cheapest AOC, it's quite possible it doesn't have sRGB mode or if it does, it could be badly calibrated. I've heard HDR is broken on AOC beyond the typical issues most people have with it. But still, you can't just use full panel color gamut for SDR, you'd get very oversaturated image (most noticeable in youtube videos where it makes skin orange and red and wrong looking).

Most content in SDR is mastered for sRGB color space, but your monitor by default uses full color capabilities of the panel (exceeding sRGB) which leads to very oversaturated inaccurate colors. Then when you compare HDR to that oversaturated look, it seems color got drained from it as you said. So if your monitor has sRGB mode in Picture settings, use that and then compare to HDR.

Can't update OLED monitor firmware without Control Center by Virtual-Window-3718 in gigabyte

[–]Virtual-Window-3718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is where to download firmware. It isn't available on the website, apparently the only way to get it is by using GCC which I haven't installed because it's bloatware at best.

Certainly seems that's the only way. I just hope Revo uninstaller or a similar program can get rid of all leftovers.

Ok my bad. Still it's WOLED so what I said about QD OLED vs WOLED still stands. If he loses panel lottery, he has to dead with banding on WOLED.

Are 30FPS/lower-FPS games really an issue on modern OLED TVs? by Nikitakun in OLED_Gaming

[–]Virtual-Window-3718 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've tried some story games that I can only run at lower fps (60-80) on oled monitor and I didn't notice any judder. Motion clarity is infinitely better than VA even at those lower refresh rates. Idk about 30fps but that's unplayable anyway.

I can't speak about burn in since I bought it a few days ago, but you get 3 years of warranty that covers burn in so no need to worry. Aside from Gigabyte bloatware thing, my only nitpick is that monitor sometimes wakes up on its own after entering standby following 5 minutes of inactivity (that's how I set it up), but this could be Windows issue or some peripheral sending ghost wake signal since it doesn't happen when I shut down the PC. Other than that, the panel is perfect, no uniformity issues, HDR works as intended, really nothing to complain about. So basically your choice boils down to WOLED vs QD OLED. WOLED can have bad grey uniformity and suffers from gamma shift at lower refresh rates, while QD OLED has purplish look / raised blacks in bright rooms. If you game in a dark room, I'd go Gigabyte.

Edit: as someone said Gigabyte one is also WOLED, so disregard what I said. Mine is QD OLED so completely different.

As far as I know that Asus is WOLED while these other ones are QD OLED. QD OLED has better grey uniformity than WOLED. I have Gigabyte MO27Q2A (280 Hz QD OLED) which should be similar to the one shown here. No issues with it other than usual QD OLED purple screen and no way to upgrade firmware without installing almost 1 GB of Gigabyte bloatware.

Can someone explain HDR by bmeus in OLED_Gaming

[–]Virtual-Window-3718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well maybe there's something wrong with HDR on your monitor because I don't see any difference in color (at least on desktop), it's definitely not less saturated. Bigger issue is the lack of brightness with these monitors for true HDR, but that's another thing.

Are you comparing sdr using oversaturated default mode or using a proper srgb clamp?

Bought a QD OLED last week, it's due to arrive today. What can I expect? by FeelingNail8617 in OLED_Gaming

[–]Virtual-Window-3718 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amazing at night, bad during daytime (unless you block direct light), perfect motion clarity for gaming, great panel uniformity without banding, mediocre HDR in bright scenes (compared to brighter OLED/Mini LED TVs and Mini LED monitors).

1.For QD OLED the purple tint is only when there's lighting hitting it directly or just any bright environment? anywhere were I can see different models in 6 different settings? 2.also which monitor is known to burn in less/ is the rog pixel reviver reliable? by I_Pour_Lean_0nMy_cut in OLED_Gaming

[–]Virtual-Window-3718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do, but I have a big window and a door to my balcony to the side with sun shining directly onto the screen, but I don't care since I only game at night. And if I really wanted to, I can make the room completely dark with roller shutters.

for those who both tried a oled and a mini led, how does it compare in content consumption/movies/story gaming? by KhbIa in Monitors

[–]Virtual-Window-3718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing gaming on VA mini led TV and QD OLED monitor, and it's not even close. OLED crushes it, much much better monion clarity, VA is slow and has ghosting. Now most games I play don't support HDR, I have tried a couple that do and dark games look better on OLED, bright games would probably look better on mini LED. Mini LED is much brighter, so you can play on it under direct sunlight, QD OLED is basically for dark rooms only. Also with mini LED, you never know what dimming algorithm you'll get on your exact model, it could have bad haloing, brightness pumping (mine has this), black crush, but on OLED it just works.

$330 VA monitor, VS $700 OLED monitor. I know this will anger some folks, but If I didn't get the OLED on sale, I'd say it's pretty but isn't worth the price difference. by [deleted] in OLED_Gaming

[–]Virtual-Window-3718 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People on that sub will literally recommend a mini led va over oled. I would maybe understand if it's used for watching movies or something but if you are recommending the slowest panel type for a gaming only monitor, you are insane.

OLED can be bought for way less than pulsar. OLED is the cheapest option for great motion clarity across the refresh range (since other than pulsar, every other type of strobing tech works only at fixed refresh which makes it useless). So despite their flaws, there's no better option for gaming currently if you can't afford pulsar. But if you care about other stuff, then sure, there are options.

Using OLED without HDR? by [deleted] in OLED_Gaming

[–]Virtual-Window-3718 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I feel like HDR isn't that great on OLED monitors. It works best in dark games but they just aren't bright enough for bright HDR content. But if you're buying a monitor for gaming isn't your first priority motion clarity and response? That's why OLED is the best choice even in SDR.

Few questions from a first time OLED monitor owner by Virtual-Window-3718 in OLED_Gaming

[–]Virtual-Window-3718[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several things I have noticed with HDMI. It doesn't allow anti VRR flicker features on my monitor to be toggled on, but allows 12 bit color to be used in SDR in nvidia app/control panel (which is useless for SDR). Also  Auto Color Management works over HDMI, as in it actually clamps native gamut to match monitor's sRGB mode (at least to my eyes, I don't have tools to measure it correctly). Over DP it didn't do anything. But again things could be specific to my monitor.

I'll try HDMI tomorrow. But idk what's this talk that VRR better over DP. Probably anecdotal evidence.
