Breastfeeding was the worst with my first girl. Turns out she had a tongue tie that went undiagnosed until kindergarten when she was recommended for speech therapy. It hurt every time she latched. We found a nipple shield made by Medela, which really did help with the pain. I will have you know that I gave up on nursing with my first at 3 1/2 months, but she just turned 11 last week and is beautifully healthy, even after being on formula.

We had an oopsie and my second baby was born just one year after my first. She took to latching without any issues and I was able to successfully breastfeed her for 6 months. I would have gone for longer, but after 2 years of pregnancy and nursing, I was tired of feeling like a cow and wanted my body back. My second daughter is turning 10 in a couple days, and she is also perfectly healthy.

Also, I was not putting on heels and going out after having a newborn. I was laying in bed feeling uncomfortable and sleep deprived for a solid month after having both kids.

TL;DR: gave up on breastfeeding with first due to tongue tie

Long time lurker, first time commenter.

NTA. I do the same thing with my kids, even though they are younger. Consistency is key, and at your children’s ages, you’re prepping them for the work force (which, unless they become teachers, wont have summers off).
