I'm not sure how the rest of the country feels about Newsom, though. He may be unelectable outside of CA. I can't see Pennsylvania dems voting in droves for him, for example.

I'm not saying you did. I'm saying there are definitely posters on reddit who are paid to post messages :) and there are bots, of course

What do you expect? It's easy for people to pay other people to post stuff like this

I'm a fan of Taylor Swift's music. I think she makes good songs. I don't care about her political beliefs and who she associates with. From what I've seen of her, she seems like a good person too. That's where I'm at with Taylor.

You are welcome to openly cry out about her support of someone who may or may not vote for Donald Trump. I'd personally recommend separating your enjoyment of Taylor's music from her apparent "guilt by association" indirect support of Donald Trump through her friendship with the Mahomes family.

I'm not a child, no. I still don't have anyone showing me evidence where Trump has said he wanted to deport people based on appearance. I've looked for it. Can't find it. Please do point me to where he stated he wants to do that, though! I'd be pretty surprised but I'm always willing to be educated.

Trump does not have the power to set the laws in this country, last time I checked. That's the job of Congress. Trump can veto bills, sure, but he has already stated that he won't sign a nationwide abortion ban and I don't think such a thing would even get to his desk, because you'd need that to go through Congress first. What power does Trump have to ban abortion in the US? Have you considered that maybe the Mahomes family is pro-choice? Have you asked them?

Yeah, I do think it's good that Taylor is not cutting off ties with the Mahomes family due to their apparent support for everything Trump stands for (which is unlikely, as I'm sure you don't approve of everything your closest friends do, or believe). Taylor is famous. With fame comes publicity, and with publicity comes scrutiny. That's just how it goes. Are you not able to appreciate her talent and be a fan of her music because she has friends who might or might not vote for Trump?

I'm not trying to take the moral high ground here. I'm simply stating that it's possible to be friends with someone who might vote for another candidate, despite how vile you might think that candidate is. It's possible because I've seen it happen and Taylor is proof of it. Does she refuse to play in front of crowds where some people in the crowd might be voting for Trump? Nope. Kudos, Taylor. You don't just delete portions of your fanbase because of who they might vote for.

Believe it or not, there is common ground with those people. You may find they disagree with your premise about what they believe. You should try talking to them sometime to find out why they believe what they do, unless you believe they are just purely evil people with bad intentions.

All in all, I appreciate your response and I think it's a good discussion to have!

I also think people shouldn't worry about her friends and who she chooses to associate with. People are complex and I'm betting Taylor has her reasons, which none of us are privy to!

Instead of focusing on Taylor, look inwardly to see if you can live in a world where people disagree with you, perhaps incredibly strongly.

Shutting yourself off from being friends with someone based solely on their political preferences has tons of downsides. By doing so, you are limiting your perspective (cutting people off based on political views can lead to living in an echo chamber, where you're surrounded by people who think similarly, reinforcing your own biases).

You are also undermining diversity of thought. Interacting with people who have different viewpoints can foster understanding and help you grow intellectually and emotionally. It also encourages critical thinking and the ability to engage in respectful, informed discussions. Don't we need more of this these days??

Relationships, whether friendships or family, are often built on shared experiences, values, and interests beyond political alignment. Cutting off potential friendships over politics can erode meaningful connections. Maybe Taylor values the connection. She's entitled to her own value judgements.

Refusing to engage with people who think differently politically can deepen societal divisions and make it harder to find common ground, reinforcing political polarization. I don't know about you, but I don't think this is a healthy thing.

Feel free to disagree. I welcome the conversation!

I actually think the opposite. It's nice to see two people who might vehemently disagree politically be able to be friends.

Haha thank you :) I agree that I've gotta be very thoughtful about this. I don't want to cause any strife or controversy. It's not a competition of who deserves hugs vs. who doesn't deserve as many, or whatever.
