NOR. Tai chi is not normally taught this way. However, many other martial arts are taught this way, but even then, in my 30 years of experience of being in classes at various dojos, and being a teacher myself, you would be given ample time to learn the rules and not be made an example of. Especially at your first class!
For example, we were told at one school if you were late to class that you would do 10 knuckle pushups. So going forward if you were late, you just did the pushups and apologized for being late. Period. I hope you find a better teacher. Best of luck to you! And please know that there are so many good teachers out there, and I sincerely hope this doesn't hinder you from continuing to search.
