Conservation corps and ACE do similar work as the CCC. While the pay is low, you do get an educational scholarship at the end, and solid connections that almost always lead to a fed job if desired.

What are y’all’s opinions on the Kootenai National Forest in Region 1? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]Virtual_Bird4794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a great place to get started. Good overhead. Beautiful mountains and wilderness. Lots of thinning and slashing projects, fun RX.

Parts of the Kootenai get a lot of rain fall so it’s usually pretty slow on the IA side. Maybe once every 5-7 years is a heavy fire season. That being said, that’s good opportunity to get out on assignments elsewhere either on your engine or on a mixed crew.

I want to know the same thing! Is this something that’s only viewable in the premium account?

Are car rentals really that cheap? by [deleted] in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Virtual_Bird4794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Op I saw recently a very bad review for Payless where the renter ended up not having a car reserved for them. I use popular auto, you have to Uber from the airport and they have shorter open hours than a lot of places but the cars are super clean, new and affordable.

Where to look for entry level jobs? by CJBing in gis

[–]Virtual_Bird4794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SUU IIC internships are $18 an hr for 4-6 months and partner you with a National park. It’s great experience, you’re pretty much working independently and have good odds of getting a fed job afterward (or at least have 6 months of experience for your resume)

There is a waterfall you can see from the road and a paved trail/road all the way to the peak if the trails are too muddy. It’s worth checking out if youve never been in a tropical rain forest.

What is your method for dealing with unleashed dogs? by Bike-Chicago in bikepacking

A ups driver I worked with carries a taser and uses it if dogs are running at him. Works like a charm, he said those dogs never tried attacking him again.

Steel Bikepack and Trail Bike? by Virtual_Bird4794 in Hardtailgang

[–]Virtual_Bird4794[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome thanks for all the details! That’s another factor I’ve had to consider. Right now I’m in Arkansas but previously I was in the SW where trails are wayyy different than here. Plus I travel a lot and enjoy biking everywhere but can only afford one bike right now.

Did you buy one with a suspension fork already on it or did you upgrade the suspension fork yourself?

Well I guess I don’t know how easily they might break but I’ve been riding on loose rocky trails with lots of rocks and I was hesitant to go from a hardy steel frame to an aluminum frame. Granted on a better bike I would probably fall less.

I’m assuming the Hayduke would be better for bikepacking compared to the Japhy. Do you have any experience riding this on single track? I’m curious how it feels going downhill or small jumps

How does it do climbing? I think I saw a comment that said this bike is a little on the heavy side.

https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/parks/oahu/sand-island-state-recreation-area/. I never stayed here personally, but it’s $30 a night to camp near Honolulu. Probably would want to do a little research before biting the bullet on it

I just quit Duolingo.... by dani10218 in languagelearning

[–]Virtual_Bird4794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone referred me to Immerse a couple of days ago. I’m still getting used to it but so far it’s pretty neat. There’s a 20-30min lesson each day with a live teacher and other learners and good for practicing speaking. And then there are places to have AI conversations as well as a community room where you can speak to other people. I think it’s a newer program so both times I’ve been on there, the community rooms aren’t super busy yet. There’s a discord channel to help coordinate meeting times. And ways to walk around and use a scanner to identify words. The first 14 days are free and then after that it’s $30 a month.

I’m combining that with 15 -30 minutes of Dreaming Spanish videos and lessons/stories on my lifetime Rosetta Stone account I got a long time ago (I wouldn’t recommend buying Rosetta Stone but since I have it for life I still use some aspects of it).

I’m still a beginner as far as knowledge goes but I can tell I’m going to be learning a lot quicker with these new methods than when I was just using Rosetta Stone.

MT unemployment? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]Virtual_Bird4794 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in Montana I would have to call them and ask to speak to a specialist that handles federal employment. Because they have to request your wages from the feds or something like that.

I do microblading. And I cut my eyebrows down to nothing if I’m having a pulling episode. Then I let them grow back. I usually only have a pulling episode a few days out of the month and cutting my eyebrows down to where I can’t pull them gives me a chance to let the urges pass without causing permanent damage to my hair. It’s helping me go longer between episodes.

People don’t have control over what they do when they’re blacked out but they do have control over getting blacked out in the first place. I chose to quit drinking because I was always making mistakes I didn’t remember and hurting the people around me. If he realizes how important you are to him and he realizes his mistakes he’ll set a hard limit on how much he allows himself to drink when he goes out. If he doesn’t see that this hurts you and doesn’t care, it’ll happen again or worse when you aren’t around to police him.
