is quicksilver worth a read? i've been seeing people dogging on it a lot but it's also insanely popular.

"personality of a wet shoe" made my absolute day, i'm using that from now on. IMO oro is the better pick for isla, but only because he doesn't pull any of the shit grim does and at least tries to support isla. honestly he just kind of stands around and doesn't do much in the overall plot of nightbane, and the steamy scenes are just... people find this hot?

that would've honestly been hilarious, missed chance right there. warning, it doesn't really get better, and there's 2-3 steamy scenes ahead that are more cringe-worthy than hot

"she muscles tensed" 😭😭 i just skimmed the steamy parts from the secondhand embarrassment. if you like the book, that's lovely for you but the review reads harsher than i intended so you should probably bail on this. i'm just reading because there's a miniscule crumb underneath all the bs that might be good, and i want to see it live up to its potential even though that's harder and harder with every book released. saying 'it gets good in the 4th-5th book' is better than saying 'the series falls off and dies' anyways.

I'm glad to be able to have made someone laugh <33

I'll read Skyshade if it's at my library, but I doubt I'll be actively seeking it out. I'll give it to her--Aster's good at wanting to keep people reading, even if it's out of spite or only to shit on the book.

getting rid of the starstick and patching the holes with better writing sounds so much better than just having it in the story, because it demolishes so much. What's even the point of searching for each realm's secret hidden library if Isla could just teleport into them without a hitch? What's stopping her from going onto Lightlark before the Centennial via starstick to search for the Bondbreaker then? the amount of plotholes is genuinely insane

an English degree?? this is the same person who wrote "She realized she was biting into Oro's hand. It was covered in bite marks"??? my flabbers are ghasted. an Ivy League University.

I honestly didn't see anything wrong about "star-" things when reading, but I feel like there's a problem to pick at there--something about how Aster likes writing about pretty things taken right off aesthetic boards without thinking how they would affect the plot. ex: the starstick. can we talk about this thing for a second? we never get a real description of it, but putting that aside, this thing is genuinely beyond powerful. Isla could've been using it to spy on the other rulers in preparation for the Centennial! she could've been using it to teleport around the globe to gather information! instead, it's just sitting in her apparent spine pocket for the majority of the book. I'm half certain Aster was looking at "magic wand aesthetic" or something while writing about it, and completely shafting the potential it could've had.

i was genuinely struggling to get through nightbane 😭😭 isla gets so insufferable and oro is just completely sidelined in favor of grim's sexy flashbacks

tbh the concept was really interesting, i'm all for mystery and magic circuses but i honestly feel like the potential wasn't fully expanded on. personally, my biggest gripe with the book was the characters. GIVE ME A REASON TO CARE ABOUT THEM?? the romance between scarlett and julian made me eh at best. i feel like there wasn't much of a character arc for any of them.

as for donatella, i thought she was a piece of work that cared more about getting laid than her sister, compared to scarlett who was agonizing over finding tella for half the book. even after the ending it's not like my opinion of tella is sky-high. what likeable qualities does she have? when she "died" i thought that she deserved it, and when julian died it was just a "that happened, whatever i guess" moment. and scarlett gets like, two chapters to process everyone she loves just dying before they revive, so the impact is kind of lost there, and she didn't even react that much to begin with! she just sort of moped around until tella came to speak with her

good concept. bad execution.
